Thread: iPhone 5 to be major makeover, 'shatter' sales record

Providing his take on the new iPhone ahead of today's launch event, analyst Brian White expects the iPhone 5 to offer a "sleek, aluminum unibody enclosure" that's more like the MacBook Air than the iPhone 4. The new enclosure will not only look better but be stronger and lighter, avoiding the cracks that sometimes appear in the glass back of the iPhone 4.

The new enclosure could even pave the way for Apple to bump up the screen by at least half an inch to 4 inches or more. Echoing the opinions of other analysts, White also expects the new iPhone to boast a dual-core processor and an 8-megapixel camera.

"Apple will clearly need to upgrade the processor speed to at least a Dual Core 1.2GHz to match the Samsung Galaxy S II, while upgrading to an 8-megapixel 1080p camera that is now also on the Galaxy S II," White said.

The upcoming smartphone won't have access to the Long-Term Evolution or WiMax 4G networks that are available in the U.S., according to the Dow Jones Newswires. That will likely come as a disappointment to many who were hoping that the device would wed Apple's software and experience with a much faster data connection.

Apple plans to unveil the device at 10 a.m. PT today.

That the iPhone will run on 3G speeds only isn't a huge surprise. Tim Cook, Apple's new CEO, said earlier this year that the integration of LTE technology would require too many compromises for now--including a larger battery drain and the need for a bigger case--and that Apple would look to it in future iterations. WiMax, meanwhile, is a niche technology that even Sprint Nextel is moving away from, so it wouldn't make sense for Apple to invest in it now.

Looks like its just an iPhone 4S, with a few tweaks and minor upgrades from the iPhone 4; NOT the major overhaul we all expected.

iOS 5 looks okay... They FINALLY got with the program and added a notifications window; something Android users have enjoyed for years. Still missing homescreen widgets and moving backgrounds. I was mostly impressed with the 1-touch camera access from the lock screen. That is a nice feature

I'm buying 2 16gb'ers... my 3G is way way to slow after playing with my Ipad2 (same processor as 4s)

Im real happy with my 4, not a drop of interest in the 4s.

Coupled with the GPS enabled tasks, like "remind me to jack off when I get home," and then the phone pops up a notification to beat it when you actually arrive at your home? That's pretty impressive.

I was kind of Luke warm to the new iPhone 4s, but the new processor is the same one that's in my iPad and it is night and day faster.
So I thought I'd keep my iPhone 4 until I got a email from eBay, they have a program that buys iPhones..after I told them what I had, they offered me $315 for it. I called gay T&T and they said for $18 I could upgrade to the new iPhone 4s.
So I did it, I have 7 days to ship it, they even provided a free shipping label.
Check eBay, this program is about to end.
Bottom line I get $82 and a new phone...nice.

Pretty cool. Mines corporate, so I will wait for 5.

Apple is shelling out around $200 to make each 32GB iPhone 4S, which the company will ultimately sell for $749 not counting the carrier subsidy.

At least that's the initial estimate from research firm UBM TechInsights.

Analyzing the overall cost history and the breakdown of each major component, UBM has calcuated a manfuacturing cost of $203 for each 32GB model of the new phone. That's about the same range as Apple paid to make the iPhone 4 last year, giving the company around the same profit margin. This preliminary projection includes expenses of $26 for the new A5 processor and $31 for the Retina display.

Is this some sort of new teenage typing fad where you don't put spaces after a period? I had a friend tell me that on the web, you don't need to double space after a period. I just about shot him.
