Default Adobe Pouts, Drops Future iPhone Support

Don't let the door hit you on your way out, Adobe. Actually, go ahead and let it hit you--that would be just fine. And take your LSOs (locally stored objects) with you.

I'm no Apple fan, but anything that hurts Adobe I call good.

I love Adobe. They basically ask for their several thousand dollar Creative Suite to be pirated.

BTW, this would hurt the iphone more than it would hurt adobe, since flash is all over the internet

    Hi Ntruder,

Maybe, but I've learned never to underestimate Apple's sway when it comes to the actual business of cornering markets and making money. Flash is indeed all over the internet, but there are folks hard at work on various Flash alternatives, too. Contrariwise, iPhones and now iPads are all over the consciousness and acquisitive "Want!"-thinking of the younger generation all around the world. My belief is that any software platform incompatible with iPhones is headed for real trouble. Many of these people would much rather find a Flash alternative than an iPhone alternative.

I easily could be wrong about all this. Perhaps Google's Droid is going to put a real hurt on Apple's control of the "cool" market. The only thing I really hope to see from all this is the development of a good Flash alternative, preferably open source.

    Yours,

    David

I don't see Droid putting that big of a hurt on the already in place Apple market. Steve Jobs sure can hold a grudge though can't he?

More and more things are going html-5 though including the ever popular FarmVille (which has more subscribers than Twitter)

I dunno. Apple has sold somewhere in the neighborhood of 20-25 million iPhones (during a several year period with virtually no competition), versus the how many billion PC's that utilize Adobe Flash video?

Also, its worth noting that the iPhone's lack of Adobe support is one of the key factors in my decision to get an Android phone once my iPhone contract is up.

And finally, Apple needs to have direct control over everything. I don't see an open sourced flash alternative ever being used on the iPhone. The words "open-sourced" and "Apple" don't exactly mesh well

the iPhone does and will continue to support html-5, which is where a lot of business is going instead of Adobe

I regard this whole thing as a spat between two unconscionably intrusive control-freak companies in a hissy fit over reaming rights when sticking their customers. Never mind which of them wins: I want them both to lose.

You wanna hear about hissy-fit control freak companies?

So I go into the Apple Store today, (aka, fucking puke all over everyone in a blue shirt hell-hole) because my iPhone battery has sucked balls lately. First, I called them, and asked how much for a battery replacement, to which he replied with some faggy bullshit (no offense to gay people) about how I have to make an appointment with the "genius bar" where they could discuss the issues my phone was having with me. I'm like, "no, I said how much for a fucking battery?"

So I go in there, this guy plugs my phone into a computer and starts looking at the number of crashes, average battery life, freezes, etc, then inspects my phone, claims that the water sensor is tripped, (mind you, my phone is already out of the 1 year warranty), and goes on about how I need to do a restore and update my software, and then if I was still having problems, they'd re-assess to determine if the battery is the principle culprit in the short battery life problems. If yes, they would sell me a new phone for $79. If no, meaning they determine that other shit might also be at fault, they would sell me a new phone for $199.

So I said to the guy, I will give you a blank check, you go in the back room and install a new battery. Can you do this? And of course the answer was no, because Apple's way of handling a dead battery is as follows:

Average the number of unexpected reboot, plus system crashes, plus freezes, plus average battery life in hours. Take that number and divide it by the number of months that you've owned the phone. Add 5 for a tripped water sensor, subtract 2 for untripped water sensor. Take this figure to the power of the average number of Apple genius's who have been laid in the past decade, and if the derivative of this number is equal to pi or negative pi, Apple will sell you a new phone for $79. If it is equal to any other number, the price is $199.

Maybe I'm just old school, but back in the day, people used to fix shit. When I was a teenager, (in the early 90's) and cell phones were on the rise, when something broke, you took it to the Cell One (now US Cellular) store, and they'd hand it to the technician, who'd diagnose the problem, replace the broken screen or whatever, and charge you for parts and a bit of labor. You'd pay and be on your way. But that was back when mega corporations like Apple didn't care if every single aspect of the consumer process was profitable by a factor of 10. But now, out of the fear of somebody making money on the iPhone besides Apple, the only way to replace a battery is to buy a refurbished phone from them.

    Fucking Nazis.
