Steve Jobs has been fired/kidnapped/obliterated/de-activated, or something, and a more reasonable Apple CEO, who also appears severely famished, has stepped forward and announced pricing for the new iPhone 4, set to launch June 24th.

The 16gb model will be available for $199 with a 2 year contract, and the 32gb model for $299.

This marks a departure from the traditional Apple pricing strategy of "make the prices so much higher than any comparable device that people will automatically assume its the best, and therefore sell their organs in order to have one," a strategy that was originally developed by Sony.

Unfortunately, no Verizon Wireless iPhone was announced, although I recently discovered that Verizon Wireless sucks, so I urge you all not to cry about it.

The iPhone 4 features "video calling," something that I never, ever want. Phone calls are the place where nearly 100% of my lying takes place, and a video call sure fucks that up.

Everyone thinks video calling and they instantly think "Demolition Man": Naked chick accidentally calls you and you see some tits. Well that's not what happens. Instead its your girlfriend calling you wondering where you are

Gotta buy one. Technerd and proud of it. The price is right too. Gotta sell my slightly used 3GS and preorder.

I liked the iphone, but preferred crackberry's more (typing a lot of emails). I've had VZW a long time and love it, ATT sucks.

I was recently freed of Apple's grip on my cell phone, and it felt great... Then I realized the service sucked where I live, so I had to go back to my iPhone (temporarily).

But this week, I'll return to the wonderful land of freedom... Freedom from Apple. Freedom from controls. A land of opportunity.

Yeah I'd like to change my own battery too but Apple makes osme sweet equipment and this phone looks awesome. I am available to upgrade so I'll be online on the 15th to place my order. I understand the gripes about service. I lived through Nextel and Sprint crappy service for a long time but I get great service from AT&T here in the Boston area.

I'd love to try Android, but now I'm on a company phone and don't have the option. At least it's a crackberry though.

I've had an iPhone for almost 2 years, so the software had gotten old for me... They do make nice hardware (and software), but I'm sick of having my hands tied. And I really don't like dealing with Apple. Some funny looking 17 year old in a blue shirt with no technical education or training is able to determine just by holding my phone that the software malfunctions are my fault? And of course I don't have insurance on it, because I couldn't get insurance on the iPhone, because Apple won't play ball with the insurance companies...

Anyway, before that spirals out of control, I'll shift to a new topic. The phone itself does look nice, but its just more of the same. The 3GS will run most all of the OS4 functions, so the biggest feature would be the faster processor and higher res screen... Not enough to keep me away from the Evo. The Android platform is just so much better in my opinion. You go from having a highly restrictive cell phone to a full blown computer in your pocket.

Service is subjective. I railed against AT&T's service for 2 years, but the other carriers (Verizon) weren't what I was expecting them to be. US Cellular is still the only carrier that deserves the money you pay them for cell service.

How exactly are your hands tied using the iPhone. What do you need to be freed up to do?

The Evo looks like a fine phone, though I do not like the idea of paying an extra 10 dollars a month for a feature that isn't available where I live (4G). Cell carriers are all really dependent on where you live, thankfully living in a metro area I can go with any carrier and get a great signal. Just at this time there isn't anything that interests me more than the iPhone.


Android isn't as "open" as it's portrayed to be. Not by a long shot.

Its kinda redundant trying to explain all these things to an iPhone user... The Android platform is so much more user customizable. A few examples; the 7 home screens can be customized however you'd like. App links, widgets, etc. Items that are usable straight from the homescreen, instead of just links to an app. The phone can actually interface with your computer without using iTunes. This means you can use the phone as a mass storage device, which was a huge thing for me, since you can't do that with the iPhone. The platform is compatible with mobile versions of Flash, meaning that websites actually work (the Droid Incredible did this quite well). The battery is obviously removable on Android phones. The charging ports are a universal micro USB, instead of the proprietary iPod cable. The apps range much more in variety, because they don't have to go through Apple's filter.

I'll flesh out one example for you:
iPhone: putting music on the iPhone. Lets say I download Album A on my work computer and want to put it on my phone. Hopefully, you brought your proprietary iPod/USB cable to work with you, otherwise you're shit out of luck. But suppose I did bring your iPod cable; so I connect my phone, open iTunes, and drag over the album. Now its on my phone. But now lets say I'm at home, and I want to listen to Album A on my computer (hopefully, you brought your iPod cable home). I cannot transfer Album A from my phone to my home computer. I cannot even play Album A on my computer by hooking up my phone to the computer. So that means the only way to listen to Album A on my home computer is to download it again, or use a 3rd device to copy the files and bring it home. So lets say I already have Album B on my home computer, and I want to put it on my phone. Well guess what? Your iPhone can only sync to one computer at a time, so if I want to put Album B on my phone, I have to wipe the ENTIRE MUSIC LIBRARY and sync it with the music library on my home computer. So now I have Album B, but not Album A, or any of the other music I had on my iPhone. Also, every time you sync, it wipes away your on-the-go playlists! Now I realize that the idea of managing your phone's music folder from TWO COMPUTERS might sound totally inconceivable, and no, I'm not a time traveler from the future. I actually have two computers. No wait, I have 3 computers. And yes, I would like to be able to add songs to my iPhone from any of those computers without buying a separate USB drive and first syncing up all 3 of my computers' music folders. But of course I can't do that, because its an iPhone, and it won't let you. Why? I don't know. There's no good reason that I can think of. I'm sure Apple figured out that this might somehow have the capacity to cost them money or lost revenue or something, and therefore, its not allowed.

Droid Incredible: Suppose you have a Droid Incredible in the same situation. Simply plug in the phone via any micro USB cord you might have laying around (you will be prompted to choose a sync program, mass storage device, or charge only) pick mass storage, and simply go into your music folder and copy over Album A to your Droid phone. Take your Droid home, plug it into your home computer, and copy the Album A folder from the phone onto your home computer. Done.

You carry lots of micro USB cables around, you just have those laying around....really? I just don't understand your hatred for the big fruit. I also just don't get the huge NEED to have a removeable battery. I have never had a second battery for any phone nor needed one in 12 years. I've used Android a plenty and see nothing special in it. WebOS was the only other mobile OS that was remotely as good as iOS. Hopefully HP does something with it.

The iphone wore off on me pretty quickly, but mainly because it was business related and I did not like typing on a touch screen. The use of the proprietary cable is just another annoyance of apple. I did however just pick up a 160gig Ipod Classic, and its very nice. My car has an oem cable that allows the factory radio to control an ipod, and im gonna load it with songs and keep it connected in the car at all times.

This is the biggest problem with Apple fanboys; your unwillingness to allow any criticize of an Apple product. I don't hate the iPhone; I own one for Christ's sake, and if the Sprint EVO's coverage isn't what I need it to be, I'll have an iPhone 4. I just don't sweat Steve Jobs' balls like you Apple fanboys do. I am actually able to recognize its obvious flaws. You Apple fanatics actually defend some of the ridiculous decisions that they make, like the lack of Flash support. You have fanboys saying stuff like "flash sucks anyway, this is a good thing."

And yeah, I have micro USB cables at home and at work. Its not a proprietary HTC product, like the iPod cable.

I just think we should be past the point of proprietary cables. Mini USB has been around for years and years, and virtually every camera on the planet uses Mini USB. That's what all phones should use, but Micro USB is even smaller, and will probably be the norm on cameras if its not already. This means that generally, there's a Mini or Micro USB cord sitting at or around every computer. But there's obviously not an iPod cable sitting at every computer. I just checked my work; there's a Mini USB cord plugged into every computer at my work.

You've highlighted another issue with the proprietary cable. Because the iPod was the first to the market and owns a huge chunk of the market share for portable music devices, stationary devices all have "ipod" adapters, but not necessarily other MP3 player adapters. If they used the same cables, this might be different. So this ends up being a plus for ipod users, and a minus for everyone else, whereas it could have been a plus for everyone, had Apple used a standard cable.

Here are some criticisms of the iPhone that I have had for a long time.

No multitasking. I hate exiting an app to respond to a text. No multitask for the 3G so I'd have to upgrade to have it.
My 3G is slow as shit, the processor not the net.
Predictive text switching words when I don't want it to.
Screen orientation not having a lockable function. Sometimes I may want to hold my phone goofy.
Speaker isn't loud enough when on speaker phone in the car.
Limited options on text received noises and can't personalize them.
Flash really doesn't bother me because it's mostly just ads. I can live without that and the very few only flash sites out there.


Just because I think it's still the best platform doesn't mean I think it's perfect. No nothing is.

Ntruder I just think your looking for that impossible perfection. It's ok to hope for it but slamming everything else isn't the answer. Much like your rants about how Verizon was amazing and AT&T sucked. That didn't turn out so well.

The Incredible, EVO and every other Android phone aren't perfect either. They have flaws too.

Let me stop you right there. You made two posts where you were basically annoyed that I had issues with the iPhone. If you're not a Jobs blowing Apple fanboy, then me criticizing the iPhone shouldn't bother you too much.

Obviously I liked the iPhone; I gave up the greatest cell carrier in the world just so I could have an iPhone. But now I'm ready to move on. I've used Android 2.1 with the HTC Sense UI, and I liked it a lot better. Time for a change.

I made the mistake of assuming that all CDMA carriers were equal. Not the case. I was a US Cellular customer for like 16 years, and their network is virtually flawless (except basements) in the midwest, and I assumed Verizon had the same type of coverage. Technically they do, because all Verizon phones will roam onto US Cellular towers, but that creates all these areas where you ALMOST have a Verizon signal, and the phone won't roam. And, as you may recall, I made a thread talking about how wrong I was in assuming that Verizon would be the magical rural coverage king.

But that's not even a comparable example. I'm now talking about two pieces of hardware, both of which I've used. Bitching about network quality and assuming that another one is better, one that I hadn't even used, is not the same thing. I like the Incredible/Evo because I've used them and I really liked what they had to offer, not because I'm assuming they're better.
