Quote:

How you view Hollywood's summer movies depends largely on how you measure success.
If you're a dollars-and-cents fan, summer 2010 marked a new record for revenues, with $4.35 billion in ticket sales in the USA and Canada, according to Hollywood.com.

But if you measure the health of the industry by how many people actually go see movies, things aren't so rosy. Attendance this summer was 552 million, the lowest total since 1997.

Hollywood didn't

Let's see:

*) It roughly costs me $40, for my wife and I to go, and have drinks and a snack.

*) A Blu-ray costs me about $21 from Amazon, for one I care about, a shit movie (most of em) costs me $1.65 at Redbox.

*) I don't have people who talk to each other, and/or answer cell phones at home

*) IMO, my sound system is better, because I dont keep it low enough to hear things around me, like the theater does

*) My HT setup cost me roughly $6000, so why do I even care about the theater

Seriously, the theater was great every week when I could take my date, and enjoy it for less than $20, and then if I really liked the flick, Id buy it on DVD (they made more off me when they let me see it for a decent price before I decided to buy it). Now, I pretty much take the chance on eye candy movies and buy them, the rest are mailed to me for rental, or picked up at Redbox. The theaters priced themselves outta the competition. Then, it took them for ever to upgrade to digital projection, and the last few Ive used keep the sound so low, I have no choice but to hear douche bag A rustling his skittles bag, douche bag B talking on the phone, douche bag C telling his friends "watch this" because he's already seen the movie, and then there is douche bag D, kicking my seat.

Start selling Blu-rays the day a movie comes out, and let the cards fall where they may. My theater attendance has dropped every year, over the last 3 or 4. Last year, I probably did 6 (most were films on a bigass Imax screen, and they are worth the dough), this year we have done 1, and it was by accident (had tix for a free showing but we were late). I doubt Ill see another this year, and my goal next year is ZERO.

A thrilling piece of survival horror, so tense that you almost hope for some down time. A great concept has three people stuck on a ski lift, with no employees around for an entire week.

A bland looking film, with flat photography. Colors are pale, blacks are fine, but fine detail never kicks in like it should.

A rather robust audio mix offers wind, falling snow, and hungry wolves passing through the soundfield. A hefty soundtrack is nicely done too.

Two commentaries and a series of featurettes that are more or less one documentary make up the excellent bonus features.

A wonderful, crazy, and fast-paced creature feature, loaded with explosions, gore, and awful CG sharks. It doesn't get much better.

A remarkable transfer in close, producing some of the best close-ups you'll probably ever see on this format. Staggering detail. Unfortunately, all of the stuff when the camera pulls back is pretty rough, with softness and black crush.

A rousing audio effort, from the constant stream of splashing water, rain, thunder, and explosions. Powerful bass, aggressive surrounds, and wonderful fidelity.

A commentary, two featurettes, and deleted scenes round out the extras.
