Default Disco's MAG (Massive Action Game) Review

    MAG (Massive Action Game)

    PS3

    Shooter, Online Multiplayer Only

Zipper Interactive the team behind the SOCOM created this monstrosity of a shooter. Now this is a team that has pretty good pedigree. But in the case of MAG they really bit off more than they could chew. MAG pits you in huge 256 player online battles, 128 on each team. You have to work up to play in these huge battles MAG's "Domination" mode. It didn't take long to make it to level 8 in order to do so, but that doesn't mean it wasn't painful. I really REALLY wanted to like this game. COD:MW2's online multiplayer has gotten a bit stale to me. It's Michael Bay approach to making everything bigger, faster and stronger just isn't singing to me like it did initially. Was this the game to hold me over till something better comes along? As you've probably guessed by now, that answer is a resounding NO.

    Story and Presentation

MAG is a online only game. So story here is really at a minimum, but I'll give you the basic rundown. It's 2025, the world has been thrust into perpetual war. This war isn't being run by government militaries, but by PMC's (private military corporations). War has become a business. There are three major PMC's. Valor (think American Military), Raven (European run, high tech), and S.V.E.R. (pronounced sever, Russian in nature, guerilla like warfare). When you start the game you create a character and pick a PMC to play in. I picked Valor, I knew the weapons, so it was a nice comfort zone for me. O.K. there is your story! Yep that's it.

The menu system is logical and easy to navigate. You won't have much of a problem finding options or how to level up your character or change gear load outs. This is one of the few high points of the game.

    Gameplay & Mechanics

This is where it all starts to fall apart for MAG. Yeah that's not good. Now when you start out you have a little training mode to run through. It's essentially a tutorial on controls and how to capture objectives. Don't spend much time here, it's a shooter. If you've played one, you'll be ok. Next up, and your only other options is the Suppression mode. This pits 32 against 32 of your PMC. It's just an exercise, non lethal ammo. You have a large map, two spawn points on each side. This essentially plays out as just a Team Deathmatch. You start at your spawn, pick one of your weapon load outs and run on in. Now you get to deal with the shitty aiming controls. Players can move so fast that no matter how high you turn up your aiming speed in the options you can't track a target with your weapon. Not when your looking down the gun sight. So you resort to running around hip firing and spraying everywhere. Yippee! So if your a shooter fan that likes to move around with some caution (like a real soldier) you will find no joy here. Now this doesn't change, whether your just starting or at level 8 when you can play 256 vs. 256. Then you just get to run further across the map to actually find the action when you die. You'll spawn, run out of your area and get sniped. Yeah be prepared for a lot o that. A great deal of dying, spawning and running back to the action. This is where they made a serious error. There should be closer spawn points as your team takes areas. I could go on and on bitching about the gameplay here. It's no good folks.

    6.5

    Graphics

MAG takes a massive hit in the graphics department in order to run 256 players in one game (which it does with no lag). So trust me folks there is nothing pretty to look at here. Bland textures, horrid pop up, and you pretty much can't tell the difference between friend and enemy until they are right on top of you.

    6.0

    Sound

You get a nice THX intro at the beginning of this game, but my god I can't figure out how they got that cert. The music is horrid, the guns sound bad, and grenades sound like someone banging on a trash can. The sounds all at least come from the proper direction on your surround system. You just won't like what you hearing.

    6.0

    Longevity

If you find some sort of enjoyment in MAG you might play it for a couple weeks. The 6 hours I put in were painful. Don't bother starting a Valor or Raven character, you'll end up switching to S.E.V.R. due to horrid balance issues.

    5.0

    Verdict

Avoid at all costs. I just really can't recommend this game to anyone. There are obviously people that like it. There were lots of people playing it. But I feel like I wasted 6 hours of my life.

    I own some stuff.

Nice review. I heard some nasty things about this game about stacked teams or clans...

That comic was my exact experience with the beta for MAG. The third time I died I threw my controller in the air and said "Fuck this shit"

Yeah, we could get a HDJ team together and find out who will be first to get frustrated and quit. Seriously, that has to be frustrating to get shot time after time and not know where it's coming from. That would frustrate the hell out of me too.

When I played COD, not sure which one, that's how it was. I would be running from one spot to the next then bam. dead.. I was like WTF.. After the 10th time I quit, and never played another COD game again. lol

Yeah, that's kinda how COD is... That's why I play Halo. When someone shoots me from across the map, I turn around and kick their fucking ass.
