Thread: Need help figuring out video/audio wiring setup

The house we just bought has a spot above the fireplace that has been pre-wired. They ran a bundled cable that contains 6 min RGB wires (green, blue, red, yellow, black, and white) and 2 cat5 wires over to a closet where I will put my SAT and DVD. I have a 55" plasma that is above the fireplace along with a Vizio soundbar. Right now I have connectors on the green/red/blue wires for component video but have to use analog audio and I have to change the connectors in the closet back and forth when I want to switch between TV and DVD. That has become a major pain so I want to change this and accomplish 2 things.

1. I want to have a setup in which I do not have to switch cables back and forth between sat box and DVD.
2. I want to have digital audio instead of analog.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Maybe some sort of HDMI over Cat5 setup? The problem is the one HDMI over Cat5 extenders I have seen is only for 1 source. I thought I would be able to add an AV receiver and run SAT and DVD through this and then only have one HDMI out to TV, but have been told that these extenders will not handle this type of setup using an AV receiver.

I'm lost on what my options are...please help.

Not sure about the HDMI over Cat5 setup. Sound like the AV receiver should be able to connect the SAT and DVD as inputs and then just output the video only through the HDMI/Cat5 cable. I have about 5 devices as inputs to my Onkyo receiver (straight connection and HDMI splitter) and one HDMI output to the TV for video only (no sound).

I figured that would work too. But tech support at Monoprice told me their HDMI over Cat5 extender would not work when going through a receiver. He didn't give me a detailed explanation, he just told me it would not work for that situation. I guess I could always try it and then return it if it doesn't work. They told me they do not carry any product that would fit my needs.

Does anyone else have any suggestions?
