Question about LCD wall mounts...

I will get a vertical tilting wall mount for my 46" LCD. Do I need to look at certain specs? Is there really a difference between these that I need to look into? I know I need one that holds a 46" LCD but there are some that say they're recommended for 22"-46" size tv's or some that say 32"-55". Does it matter? Or should I just go with lowest cost among the vertical tilt 46" wall mounts?

Hi Steve44,

If it were me, I would go with whichever mount is rated the best and has the greatest load capacity, not the one that's cheapest. These TVs are quite heavy; it takes more than just a fairly sturdy metal bar to support one. My guess is that the difference between a 22"-46" and a 32"-55" capacity mount is the degree of support it provides. Personally, I'd go for one that has 46" at its low end and comes from a reputable maker.

Hey gang, I was honestly thinking about getting an HD TV possibly 55' but I want to mount it over my fireplace. The stone used on my fireplace is not smooth by all means. The stones stick out all over and I use my wood burning insert about 8 months out of 12.

Is it possible to mount it on an uneven surface? AND would it be safe to mount over the wood insert?

I did an articulating arms wall mount for my 58" Panny. Have some pictures of the custom work that took all weekend and then some but never had the chance to post them yet. I would strongly suggest an even surface because having it level is the most important thing. The mounting kit may come with some masonry screws but it is still difficult to try to get it leveled with an uneven surface. Are you planning to drill some holes through the stone to run the wires behind the wall?

Well, the fireplace makes me a little nervous. Drilling into bricks instead of into wood would be a chore, but I expect the result would be a more secure fixture, so that seems good to me, but the fireplace--heat is never a good thing to add to one's TV, you know?

I got a couple of buddies who had mounted their TVs on top of the fireplace. Like I've told them... it's so ghetto!

The masonry screws were meant for bricks (even surfaces). You can definitely drill through the brick and stone, but that's too much manual labor like D-Train said. Plus routing the low voltage wires and the power wires (which has to meet electric codes in your area) behind it, that would be a tremendous task to take on. Suggestion: if you are fixated with having it there at the fireplace, why not have it stand on the mantle? You could probably brace it from tipping it over somehow...
