How much you looking to spend? How big is your place that you need wireless coverage for?
Some routers are good for 1000 sq ft and others are good up to 10,000 sq ft.
You know that the gigabit is only going to help when with your computers talking to each other. I personally have a D-link Xtreme gaming router, you may not need this caliber of a router, but I've had it since 2008 and they keep having firmware for it. Never had a problem with it either.
I've also owned Belkin products with no problem.
I would stay away from netgear though. I've tried two in the past and they keep dropping the signal.

homank - thanks for the response.. I would say I am looking to spend under $100. The house was wired in cat6 a few years ago so as long as the ends were terminated within spec I should be good to go as far as the wired connections and gigabit speed. I would guess I want about a 150-200 foot radius for wireless, including getting signal into the basement. Everything that matters (HTPC, directv receivers, xbox, and desktop) is wired. Wireless is the wii, phones, and laptops - all of which are N now. The main reason for wanting to go with gigabit is to move large files across the wired network - right now its about an hour to move a blue ray from one drive to the next and I figure gigabit will cut that down a little - realizing that the hard drive then becomes the bottleneck. Plus, my 7? year old linksys wr54g has a mind of its own and either hangs or needs kicked about once a day or every other day. I just picked up a rosewil gigabit switch for $19 so I figure its time to do the rest. I have been looking at the dlink 655 and netgear 3500 - you hear good and bad about both. I am not opposed to off brands especially with dd-wrt and tomato out there.
Transferring big files like that I guess would require a gigabyte network.
Both of the routers you mentioned would be up to the task, do some research and see which one would be best for you. I know which one I would take though.
Your network sounds impressive though.

thanks! Its nothing special - but it works- It looks like your dlink and the dlink 655 are similar.. sounds like you have had great luck with it! The more I read - I am wondering if I should go with dual band..
thanks
jim
Dual band would only be worth while if your equipment supports in the 5 GHz range. Now since everything is "N" I'm sure that your stuff would be able to do 5 GHz, double check to make sure is the only way to know for sure.

Have to add something to this discussion. Talking to you I just now went into my settings and changed the frequency from 2.4 to the 5. I'm sure glad that I did as well. My speed has just doubled on the wireless side. When you bring up Windows Task Manager, under the networking tab you can see what speed your at. With the 2.4 my top speed was 130 Mbps, now with the 5 I'm seeing up to the full 300 of the router.
Thank you very much for bringing that up.

funny how things work - out hack it guy at work had a dlink 655 in the box - so I took it home last night to try it out - 150mbs on all my wireless devices and and the gigabit switch part of the router cut my transfer time of a 40gb blu ray across the wired part of the network from 89 minutes down to 28 minutes.. not to bad! I'll bet I could get 300mb/s wireless with the 5ghz band. Now to find a decent price on either a netgear or dlink![]()
holy crap , i did mine it was only 6.5 download and .58 upload and 55ping, what would i really need to get numbers like yours ??? i think i am limited cause my isp is only 6mbps, cant get the 12mbps cause windstream doesn't have the 12 available here.
how can i find another , hopefully better carrier ?
thanks
god bless

Tony - look at where he is - south korea - speeds like that are common there. America is really third world when it comes to internet speeds...
My best advice is to stick with D-Link or Netgear. The rest depends on your budget.
The D-Link Extreme Gaming router mentioned earlier is awesome. I just updated from that router to a dual band Netgear WNDR3700. Also awesome and dependable.

I don't recommend the router I use though. Yes its dual channel, but you may only use one at a time.

The new Netgear WNDR3800 should be truly awesome. As good as D-Link has been, lately my preference has been Netgear.
