    Default Bass trapping/Acoustical Treatment

I've seen a lot of clever ways of adding stylish panels to walls, or hiding them. I was wondering if simply using the proper insulation when building the room, is enough. Or does the treatment need to be on the outside of the sheetrock? Or is it better to use something other than sheetrock?

    You can use this.....

    Soundproofing Drywall
Reliable, easy, and cost-effective noise reducing solutions for commercial and residential construction
Introduced in 2002, QuietRock was the first manufactured sound damped panel on the market. Offering outstanding acoustic performance, QuietRock is the leading soundproofing brand installed using a breakthrough thin wall technology. With just one layer QuietRock exceeds STC code requirements for both residential and commercial applications. QuietRock is laboratory tested delivering high STC performance that outperforms multiple layers of gypsum and is dramatically more reliable - replacing traditional noise reducing methods like resilient channel, mass loaded vinyl, and soundboard.

That reading led me to these guys. As a cheaper alternative (QR is 10times the cost of normal sheetrock) you take 2 pc's of 5/8" drywall, and glue them together with a layer of this stuff. It def works to soundproof the room, but not sure how well that works for absorption.

I guess the wall mounted absorption panels may still be a must.

OK, to revisit this, here is my current plan for the room I have now.

Gik Acoustics 242 panels, 3 pack.

    http://www.gikacoustics.com/gik_242_...ic_panels.html

professionally constructed with a rigid core and built-in air gap
easy wall and ceiling installation using wire integrated in the back like a picture frame
free standing options available using brackets or metal stands
    employs ECOSE technology
    standard size: 24” x 48” x 3.5”
    weight: 9 lbs (each)
can be custom sized to fit your specifications
available in 9 standard GIK Acoustics fabric colors
additional Guilford of Maine fabric choices available
Here is a shot of it on optional stand, of course mine will be wall mounted:

I do not have a shot of my seating, but using this image you can imagine it. Exact same as the wall behind the display, except longer. Very tall as well. We have one chair, and a 3 person couch that may be 3" off that wall, with nothing on the wall now. Im sure we are getting a lot of reflections.

My plan, using this image as an idea, is 3 panels of some color. One would be mounted vertically behind my chair, and 2 more would be centered behind the couch.

The best way if you can is to use a mirror. You sit in your primary listening position, and have a friend move a mirror from the wall where your speakers are towards you, when you see the loudspeaker that is where you put the panel. Same for the ceiling and for the rear walls too, except you sit where the display is and face the listening position, pull the mirror into the listening position from the far right and far left.

Did I explain that well?? Or are you confused??

Here is a image to help explain

If you haven't already, I suggest picking up a copy of Floyd Toole's Sound Reproduction (http://www.amazon.com/Sound-Reproduc...d+reproduction), which has many interesting things to say about room treatment and the effects of reflections. A key point is that they are often beneficial, especially side-wall reflections.

That is a well explained article and short and to the point.

There is some good info mixed in here and somewhere is one very similar to the crutchfield one.
