Default Ceiling Speakers for Home Theater

My house was prewired for surround sound, but the location and the wiring was unknown. I paid a guy $50.00 today to locate and identify the speaker wires in my ceiling. I am in the market for flush mount ceiling speakers, fronts left right, rears left right, and center channel. Tone def so a super high quality is not necessary but I do not want it to sound tinny. Anybody got any ideas?

The Polk in-walls aren't bad for the price, their 8" models in particular. I really doubt that you could beat the pricing vs. sound with any other speaker. 2x RC85i for front and rear, RC80i for ceiling and 265RT for center is $870 before shipping.

Personally I prefer Sonance or Paradigm in walls, but those prices really start climbing.

Monoprice recently began selling in-wall speakers, at some rock bottom pricing. But I have not heard them, or know anyone who has heard them.

Thanks Vlad, the Monoprice speakers are kind of hard to believe cost whys. I did contact the live chat, they were most helpful. I got a 6 speaker surround sound unit. I am going to use the subwoffer I got but will need a center channel, rights and left. Not sure which ones to get, they all preiced pretty reasonably.

Monoprice typically has pretty good quality stuff at rock bottom pricing. I have purchased a ton of wire and cables from them, and have never been disappointed.

I'd chat/call Monoprice and ask them what their return policy is in case the speakers aren't what you would expect.

I did that, they said they got a 30 day guarantee. Not sure which ones to purchase now.

    If your referring to not knowing which to choose from Monoprice and ceiling is flat and not angled I'd go for these;

8 Inches Kevlar 3-Way High Power In-Wall Speaker for the front, and possibly the rear.

8 Inches Kevlar 2-Way In-Ceiling Speakers for the ceiling.

5-1/4 Inches Center Channel Micro-Flanged In-Wall Speaker for the center.

And if you had to save $25 over getting the three ways for the rear, get the 8 Inches Kevlar 2-Way In-Wall Speakers for the rear.

Keep in mind that the Monoprice speakers are almost 1/4 the price of the Polks for all 5 speakers. You're probably sacrificing a bit of sound quality for that savings.

Also, for best sound quality out of which ever in walls that you purchase, you will need to add either some insulation or some mass loaded vinyl behind the speakers to help the sound quality. Just loading in-walls into a wide open cavity will produce a boomier sound that the speaker should produce.

I was looking at all of those speakers, thanks for the suggestions. I have come to the conclusion that it is more difficult to pick out speakers than to decide on what TV to buy. It is going to be a lot of work getting these into the ceiling then to find out they sound like sh!t would be a real downer.

I did notice the frequency response is a little higher on the lower end with the monoprice speakers than a high end POLK, JBL, Boston. Decisions, Decisions

These are getting my attention. I like the angled speaker, 10 ft ceilings and a big room I need to be able to direct the sound to a single spot. Use these for fronts, rears, center channel

Monoprice also has an angled ceiling speaker. The angled Monoprice is an 8" where the angled HTD is a 6.5".

I can see your point on the angled speaker, but I'm not sure that I would be concerned about it unless you had vaulted ceilings which I did have to contend with. I ended up with the Sonance that actually piviots, allowing you to flatten out the speaker on a sloped ceiling.

Those are quite pricy, do they sound good for the money? I see your point on the 8" speakers from MP. Took another look at the MP apeakers, they seema little to good to be true, but the price is hard to beat. Hate to get more tied up in my speakers than the TV.

The Sonance and Paradigm in-walls are probably two of the best in-wall brands that you could purchase. They do sound wonderful, and yes, you really have to pay for wonderful.

Running into another bump in the road. I am running a Home Theater in a Box, panasonic sc-btt195. It is stated to be 1000w at 3 ohms. 160w per channel at 3 ohms, the sub wof is 200w at 3 ohms. Will I be able to hook up 8 ohm speakers and get quality sound from them. Full volume is not something I forsee as a must have.

On 8 ohms speakers, the power from your Panasonic will drop from 160 to about 75 watts.

But to be honest, I've never heard of anyone going from the included speakers in a HomeTheater in a Box to other speakers. I don't know if there will be other issues or not.

As far as I can figure out whats going to happen doing this. I may get reduced volume of what the speakers are capable of, but it should drive them adequately. There should be no damage to either the speakers or the amp as far as I can tell. I may do this for the short term and eventually start looking for a receiver.

I am really leaning towards these speakers, the ability to adjust Bass, Treble, with in the speaker, the angle of them seems to better fit my situation as well. The 8 inch speakers of similar from Monoprice with the shipping are only $45 dollars cheaper. Monoprice has quite the shipping charges.

Yah, you're right on those shipping charges. I live relatively close to Monoprice so I've never seen their cross country shipping rates.

As for the bass/treble adjustments on your speakers, they can come in handy especially with the system you'll be powering them with. Once you move to a true receiver/processor, the controls probably won't matter.
