I started my home theater system using a Onkyo HTIB. I still actually use the same speakers that came with it. Just have a newer Onkyo receiver so I would have HDMI switching. Seriously these things are great bang for the buck and being in an apartment you can't go wrong with one of these. Don't know about other brands, but I can highly recommend Onkyo HTIB.
    I own some stuff.

    Hi Lambo172008,

I've not heard this latest iteration yet, but I can attest to the quality of these Onkyo HTIBs generally, as I came very, very close to purchasing one recently. They've been pretty much owning the bang-for-buck sweet spot for years now, going all the way back to their early, aesthetically clunkiest 5.1 systems back when 5.1 was a fancy new idea.

    I hope this helps.

    Yours,

    David

hey what do you think about the thx system by onkyo, it can be had now for $800 through vanns and neweegg(Code: AUDIO862), is it really 250 - 300 better? looks pretty impressive and has gotten some great reviews from cnet and hometheatermag, but neither of these compared them, just wondering what you guys think.
    Thanks,
    John

    Hi John,

That is a judgment only you can make. In terms of actual sound quality improvements, you start getting diminishing returns very quickly. I don't think you hear much sound quality difference between the two systems, really. But the truth or falsehood of what I say really does depend on how sensitive and discerning your hearing is, so I'd say your best move would be to go to a store that has both systems and listen to each of them a while, preferably with content that helps you to make fine distinctions.

Were it me, I'd get the $500 system for sure and put the extra $300 into my retirement account, or something. But I say this as a man whose hearing is not among the fussiest.

    Hi Versatile,

It is almost impossible to go wrong with these Onkyos. Really.

    Yours,

    David
