The Q&A session I posted below got me thinking about how much more I respect the guys who can win...even a boring win. I knew Fitch was going to give us another fight where he spent his time smothering another fighther. I've reached the point of my MMA viewing career where I start to get irritated when the crowd boo's a fight because they aren't laying bombs on each other. When you can fully understand the work being done on the ground and how hard it is to win a fight, you truly do appreciate it more.

What do you guys think of Jon Fitch?

Fitch doesn’t deserve title shot

Do you believe that Jon Fitch deserves another shot at the welterweight title? Champion Georges St. Pierre hasn’t been very crowd-pleasing in his last few fights, but Fitch’s fights are almost all snoozefests. He takes his opponents down and keeps them down with almost no action. I realize he’s facing top caliber opponents, but he’s not an MMA fighter, he’s a wrestler with enough standup to suffice until he can wrestle his opponent to the ground. He doesn’t seem to have any submission skills, or doesn’t care to use them, and he gets booed frequently for his cage performances. In the sport vs. entertainment debate, do you think that fighters have an obligation to put on crowd-pleasing displays if they want to advance?

It’s no revelation that Fitch is among the least-exciting fighters in the UFC, but he does deserve the shot. His record is incredible: He’s won five in a row and 21 of his last 22, most against high-level opposition. Having said that, he’s going to suffer in his paycheck, because he is not giving fans a reason to want to see him. Grinding out those methodical wins is ultimately going to make his paycheck smaller.

I like Fitch, and fights that go to the ground require more skill than just throwing bombs.

It just seems like people in the stands are so damn impatient when guys are on the ground. I guess they can't really see what's going on, but I just hate to see the ref stand fighters up when they are making progress with their position.

I agree! I hate hearing people boo when two guys are trying to catch the other in a mistake. It's what makes MMA what it is!

Yes, there is more skill and techinque involved when it goes to the ground. It's like a chess match taking place, I love it when it's on the ground.. For the people that boo, they are the idiots that just show up to a fight to see KO'S.. Anyone can knock someone out, but making them Tap takes skill..

He's a good fighter that I like, but I get frustrated when some lay on top of each other for 3 rounds. As someone else said, it IS called MMA, not lay down and hump each other, or stand up and try to make each hit a KO, and hit nothing but air. The great guys do it all, and they are the ones I like to see. I've recorded a lot of Bellator, Dream, and other stuff from Japan, and most of it is very boring, because the guys are ONE dimensional. UFC has something special, and most of their guys like to fight, and are multi dimensional.

A lot of people think hvy weight boxing is still a sport, where they throw 12 punches a round, a hug the rest of the time. Those guys deserved to be boo'd too. If it's a ground game, work, just don't lay there, or hold em against the fence for 3 rounds.
