    Default Need a 65" set

    Greetings all,

Helping my brother replace his 60" 4:3 set.

    Looking at the 65" range.

Looks like Panny's 2010 range only offers 65" in the VT series.

Don't need Viera Cast as his Denon receiver handles the net.

Not sold on 3D yet so that is not an issue.

Looks like there are not a lot of choice in this size range.

The 65" VT lists at $4300.

Apparently the S2 tops out at 54".

The S1 looks like it may be a good choice at $2200.

    Thoughts?

    Hi toomanystraydogs,

The S1 is a fine, fine tv; a good few people on this forum own and love one. It is not the equal of the V10, of course, but you actually can find S1s (and at the size he wants) and its PQ really is not far below the V10's.

Wowwwww... nice catch, man. I had no idea those were still around. Okay--I hereby change my vote. Go with the V10 Disco suggested from Cleveland Plasma. Under $3g for that thing is very good, IMO.

    Hats off to Chris!

Do S1 or V10 suffer from the rising blacks or is it just hit or miss?

    V10 at Cleveland is $3,050 w/ shipping
    S1 at A is $2,200 w/ shipping

For $850 more the V10 will give him:

    Better black level
    24P
    THX
    More PQ adjustments

    Correct?

    Correct.

The rising black levels are indeed a problem, but they do seem to be a bit hit-or-miss (so far).

Hit or miss. I've not had a problem with my S-1 so far and it has well over 1000 hrs on it. From what I have heard around the forums even after the black level rises they are still blacker than the Sammy PDPs. If he can swing the V-10 I would jump on that.
    L2W you will be missed.

Well Cleveland Plasma has a TC-P65S2 listed as coming soon. Did not see it on Panny's site.

Did notice that the V10 THX issues got cleared up via firmware, good to know.

Not sure what the difference between an S1 vs S2 would be other than, hopefully, no rising black levels.

If RBL's were not a concern I would point him right to the V10, no doubt about it.

Yes, I've heard similar experiences from other owners, and the floating blacks issue is way over-blown. Most folks don't ever notice it.

I wouldn't worry about them. My best friend has had a G10 since it came out and has tons of hours on it, and he hasn't noticed anything. The V10 is a stunning TV, and I would be in my living room today had I not found a last second Kuro deal.
    I own some stuff.

Definitely Panasonic and Definitely V10 or newer. It blows me away that these days you can get a kick ass 65" display for under 3000.00 bucks. UNREAL!

Yeah, "expensive" is an understatement! This display retails for $10,000 and I found 2 Stores that had it on sale for $5800. That's still $2800 more than a 65" V10, and I would be hard to convince that the PQ difference and performance is worth that price difference.

    I hear ya.
    I couldn't spend that.
But it still is the best 65 inches out there. It is closer to the kuro's than anything else afaik.
Wonder if the VX100u has the rising blacklevel issue like the non-premier pannys?

I am interested in the new batch of pannys.

The graphs and charts here speak of near 8G Kuro black levels with twice the light output of an ISF-calibrated 9G Kuro. The reviewer also states the 65VX100 displays a whole lot of shadow detail. It's got the best native contrast ratio currently available (unless you can find a 9G Kuro somewhere, which I doubt) and a fairly linear 2,2 gamma curve (compared to most other screens on the market). I bet you'd notice the difference from a V10 Besides, my 60" 9G Kuro cost the equivalent of 8,250 USD when it came out...
