Sony VPL-VW1000ES 4K SXRD Projector

Conclusions
With sub-$10,000 projectors offering the sort of performance they do today, the high-end home theater market is reaching for new worlds to conquer. 4K projection appears to be the obvious answer, and the Sony VPL-VW1000ES delivers the goods—at least in 2D. As for 3D, stay tuned.

While the VPL-VW1000ES can upconvert today’s HD sources to 4K, there remains the matter of the true 4K program material needed to take maximum advantage of the projector’s capabilities. Although Hollywood has digitally released more than 70 movies in 4K theatrically to date, significant 4K video material doesn’t currently exist in the consumer video world, nor is any imminent. But Sony is the only consumer electronics manufacturer that owns a major motion picture studio with an extensive catalog of new and older titles. You can be certain that it’s taking the issue of consumer 4K source material seriously. The matter is being looked into by Top Men. Pardon the familiar Raiders of the Lost Ark reference, but this time I suspect the results of their work won’t end up in an obscure warehouse in the desert.

I need these 4K PJ's to drop in price over the next 2 years

The question also remains: in what manner will 4K movies be delivered once the time is right?

Does Blu-ray have a technical foundation to create 4K at some point?

I can already see the new logo in my head with BD4K on it.

Well, Sony took a 4K filmed and compressed it to 200gb and said it faithfully represented to original. Im guessing we need 200+ gig discs and players before that can happen.

The Blu-ray specs don't have a standard for 4K content at the moment, but there is nothing to stop them from fixing that. Unless they start making quad-layer blu-rays though, they're going to have to either reduce the bitrate or use a new encoder (h.265 should be finalized in 2013...). Live content delivery is going to be...problematic over non-fiber networks, though.

Well this is my second time with this projector, first at the Home Theater Magazine lab and this time in my own house.

I compared it to my JVC RS20 at 12ftL on my Da-Lite 110" matte white high contract 1.1 gain screen.

Here is what I measured:

Sony out of the box was amazingly bright...like 29 ftL bright...it was in cinema1 mode.
I changed the unit in to Reference mode because Cinema 1 has a DCI color space not Rec709.
In reference mode with low lamp mode and Iris set to manual at 50% I was able to get SMPTE 16ftL
Next came checking the RGB Balance...in sony D65 mode the balance was very good, all errors were below DeltaE 3.0 with an average of 1.6 DeltaE.
Color space was a little off and found no way of correcting it..IE..no CMS

Now for the video part:
We used a Cambridge Audio Azur 751BD with dual HDMI outputs.
We watched a fair amount of Blu-ray video doing an instant A/B with the 2 projectors...and the end result was.... at my 15' seating distance other then the slightly brighter picture..we saw no difference.
Now....if my screen were bigger...or you sit like 7' from the screen...then the difference appears...pixel structure becomes a factor.

This was just my $02 on my Saturday time spent with the Sony unit.
