Default Pioneer’s Audiophile-Grade N50 Player Streams All Your Music Files Over AirPlay/DLNA

Once upon a time you would have bout a turntable, cassette deck, or CD player for your audiophile music setup. Wires and physical media? So archaic. That's why Pioneer now has the N50 AirPlay and DLNA compatible networked audio player, which should make your high quality audio files sound great.

The N50 has dual transformers (to improver performance in the impedance department) and USB/Optical/Coaxial digital inputs to go with RCA and Optical/Coaxial outputs. Additionally it has support for internet radio and iPod file structures, so pretty much anything stashed away on a multitude of your internet-connected electronics will play. The only thing that sucks is that you need an additional adapter for wi-fi capability (ugh).

The fact that you need an extra WiFi adapter is ridiculous.

    ME TOO!!

No wi fi is just stupid and a huge downside to the product. What were they thinking, I mean what was the first thing we all noticed about it??

I think Netgear sells something similar for about $200 bucks although it probably won't do AirTunes. The price is just too much for something like that. I wouldn't pay that price if it had Krell stamped on it.

For 599 or 699 you can get a Mac mini and do even more. The Mac-mini has a fiber optic out so your all set. You can add a huge HD and rip all your music uncompressed and stream it off iTunes or any other music player you like. You could run Linux or Windows with VMware or Parallels and use whatever windows or Linux music player your little heart desires plus you would have HDMI and could do video if need be. There are many options for less than the price if that Pioneer unit.

I think you completely missed the point. WiFi in real life is insufficient for playing CD quality 16/44.1 files. Proper hi resolution music is way beyond the bandwidth on WiFi. The N30/50 is supposedly an audiophile player. People who shell out for it will want to use it for 24/96 or higher resolution files not MP3 and the like. I am glad that Pioneer did not include WiFi. I personally hate paying for something that is totally useless.

Regarding the mac mini, it is not a solution. For starters fiber optic toslink sucks. Have you seen any real hi end DACs with toslink inputs? You pay for your hi resolution files (more than a CD would cost) put it on whatever iThing (or PC). You spend half of your life doing settings so that the output is bitperfect (out of the box it isn't, and iTunes wont play them anyway) and you listen. And it is rubbish! I ended up down converting 24/96 FLACs to 16/44.1, burning it on a CD and playing it on an 18 year old CD player (S/PDIF to DAC). The sound (red book CD quality) beats the mac mini (hi-res) by a very large margin. A margin for which you would pay $100s. I know. I tried. If anyone tells you otherwise, they are using an amp/speaker combo that is rubbish.

If the hi-res files from the Pioneer would match (or better) the sound of a CD, I would buy it. And could not care less about airplay and WiFi and all the other stuff that is exciting for gizmo junkies but are totally useless for anyone who wants to listen to high quality music.

    Just my 2 cents...
