Default What brand of separates do you own?

Since there's a similar thread about AVRs, I thought I'd open one for those of us who own separates.

What brand and model of separates do you own?
Have you owned other brands/models in the past, or have you at least auditioned them before buying your current setup?
What made you choose the ones you have now?

As stated in the other thread, I own Krell separates. Namely, a Krell HTS 7.1 pre/pro and a Krell TAS amp. My pre/pro was modded with the help of a friend, and further modding is scheduled next week. The amp is still vanilla, though some light mods are scheduled this month, and heavier mods by the end of the year.

Before Krell, I owned NAD Master Series separates: M15 pre/pro and M25 amp. They had a good price/quality ratio, though they were in an entirely different league than Krell. Besides, NAD sounds definitely British, whereas Krell is totally American. I favor punch and dynamics over smoothness and softness, so that's why I went Krell eventually - which is not to say Krell is overly harsh. It's harsher than NAD, because NAD sounds mellow in the first place.

EDIT: I enabled the possibility to pick more than one answer for those who own pre/pros and amps of a different brand.

While I don't have separates - nice move Evil. A good thread. Should be interesting.

Ok, now I *really* feel like a tool for attempting to explain how an AVR differs from separates....

As I mentioned over in the other thread, my current setup includes a Sunfire Theater Grand IV and the Cinema Grand Signature 400~7.

This was my first "real" setup...Prior to that, I think I had a Sony AVR at most...

I never really auditioned them at all - I had just moved to Colorado, and was building a new house, and snapping out a theater in the basement. At that time, both builders and banks were practically throwing money at you, and so I had the opportunity to have a finished basement and roll it into the existing mortgage...I told my AV guy at the time (the guy who did the wiring for the development, and who I had developed a friendship with) that I could spend about $20k, and he selected, brought, and installed everything (audio, speakers, control...I had the TV).

I haven't looked back since, and although I have had the itch for a dedicated 2 channel for a while, the Internet bubble has blown and I no longer have that gorgeous house in Colorado...

    Hi Loves2Watch,

you've got quite an arsenal there! How come you're not matching your Anthem separates with each other? Did you find the synergy to be better with the Conrad Johnsons and Integra respectively? Is each setup dedicated to a different purpose (e.g. one for movies, one for "quiet" music, and another for "harder" music)?

    Shucks
Each system is dedicated to something different. I find the Conrad Johnson amps to be better for multichannel music (in particular SACD's and DVD Audio) as they are tube amps dedicated to an individual channel. The Conrad amps to sound smoother yet much more powerful with the Statement D-2 then the Anthem Multichannel amp, which sounds spectacular when processed by the Integra for my home theater. The Marantz system is for my mini-theater.

Are you two running balanced XLR interconnects between your pre/pro and amp?

Btw, Loves2Watch: do you keep each mono amp close to the speaker it powers, and run longer interconnects between each amp and your pre/pro?

Exactly, the amps sit directly behind each speaker they power.

Hello there Kuro. I forgot my someone advised me that you owned an Emotiva Amp. Hope you can answer my questions. I have an Integra 70.2 that powers my (2) Dynaudio X36, (1)Dynaudio Contour SC , (2) Cerwin vega cmx 5, (1) sub JBL PS 1400 and (1) KLH 10" sub and (2) rear Cerwin vega bookshelfs -pretty old but sound pretty good.

So my set up is a (7.2) and I love it. With a Pioneer Kuro 6010 FD. Which will be replaced with the Panasonic 65VT30. I will be upgrading the cmx 5 with Dynaudio x12 speakers. Im also upgrading my KLH 10" with an Emotiva 12" sub. I was also looking into the Emotiva XPA 5 . My question is will the XPA 5 make big significant difference on the speakers and do you recommend it? And do you have any feedback on the Emotiva 12" sub? and do you recommend it?

    Thank You in advance SAL
