Default Mitsubishi L75-A94 Black Level Surprise

If my meter is accurate this deserves a separate thread.

I'm using an X-Rite D3 which should be accurate down to .001 foot Lamberts. I had initially taken a black level reading of a newly received A94 (A91 warranty replacement) of .007, said "Yeah, the claims are correct, lower MLL than the A91's .008. So?"

The display has an inoperative 2 point grayscale control so while waiting for Mits to replace the appropriate circuit board I ran an AutoCal with an iScan Duo VP and after viewing some reference material I decided to take a look at on/off contrast.

    0.003fL -- multiple measurements

I nearly fell off my chair but when I looked at the opening B&W scene from Casino Royale it seemed good to me.

The meter reads to the nearest 1/1000 making me wish I had a Klein K-10 with its 1/10,000 accuracy. Has anyone else measured the A94? I don't believe I've even seen a magazine or Internet report on the newest LaserVue.

More on the Grayscale controls. The Gains work but the Menu button must be recycled in order to see the results. The Cuts don't work at all. Mitsubishi has been notified but no response so far.

The 2011 A91s worked okay so I expect there may be a software problem. I have seen a similar report on AVS.

Where do you find the greyscale controls?

Have you had any issues with reds? I am having a problem where red things will get really really red and then fade back.
Really annoying when someone turns their head one way and lips get very red then turn more and back to normal.

I have for now gone to AV1 (or something like that) which was not even a choice until I accidentally edited the advanced video page.

Would like to maybe work with the advanced settings but there is no reference point as I can not see what all those values are for
any of the default settings anywhere I can find.

    Any help appreciated.

The 2 point grayscale controls are the Red, Green, and Blue High and Low adjustments in the ADV1 and ADV2 modes. They are made for calibrating with a meter and software but if you are having a huge problem with a color you could try putting up a pattern around 50% gray and doing the adjustments by eye as this might alleviate much of the over or under color situation. The problem is that the controls on the A94 aren't working properly.

Mitsubishi called me earlier in the week and informed me that a firmware update is coming out this week to fix the problem. I wait patiently....

I just found the 10 pages on the avsforum with a lot of your comments. Right now I have buyers remorse because of color and the size is actually a little too large.
I live in Washington so in fall winter room plenty dark but in summer room light until 10pm and nothing to be done about that. I can see will be an issue though true of
any large tv. If I had found all these reviews first (I looked but did not find them before ordering for some reason. All I found were great reviews) I would probably have gone with the 60 inch Sharp Elite. I doubt I can just return a set with no problems and shipping back to AZ would be very pricey I am sure.
I am not sure of my ability to calibrate. I need a day mode, night mode, 3D (though probably rarely use) mode.

I do not know how to do the calibration you describe and some of the detail in other forum daunting though with time I can figure it out I suppose as I have always been able to manage my electronics but after you get calibrated can we get numbers and would you be available for phone consultation for some fee?

I found a local pro but can not reach him yet and so do not have any idea of price or if he can work on this set. Can you guys work on any TV pretty much?

Will the Mits patch download to the set through ethernet once they get it done?

It takes equipment and the learning curve to do it correctly is fairly long but if you want to become a calibration enthusiast and do your own as well as your friends', neighbors', and relatives' TVs have at it. That's how I started.

There are three calibrators in the Seattle area listed here. Look here at the stickies - lots of location info.

Yes but the results are dependent on the capabilities of the display and the number and quality of the calibration controls available.

    Unknown at this time.

I did find a local calibration expert that has good refs even from cnet. But if he does not have the Mits patch he will be limited as you have been in full calibration correct?
What controls/settings are not currently functional?

The grayscale controls as described in post #2. Some grayscale work can be done in the service menu but once firmware is installed specifically for the grayscale function it may negate any previous work. I think it would best to wait until after the firmware is installed so the TV can be calibrated as advertised. No workarounds should be required.

So I used the perfectcolor adjustment on the bright setting to reduce red a few points and that helps. What I would like is to use natural for night but it needs to be a little brighter with a little more color intensity. Know how to increase both? Add brightness and color?

The manual implies that you can set all the advanced options for any mode but I do not see how to do it except for adv1, adv2 which makes it tougher to get perfect calibration for day normal, day 3d, night normal, night 3d.

Also what are your thoughts once calibrated on
deepfield imager (seems to just add brightness to me)
    color temp low or high
    edge enhance off or on
and that setting they have for making fast motion supposedly work better (if better why have it off? I assume there is some downside?)

And finally what is the diff between adjusting color vs tint?

Saw your note they are posting the patch on the web site. Hopefully not some really bizarre thing like having to burn a wav file to a dvd and play to tv to enter it.

Cool of you to help everybody out. Hopefully it brings you some business.

I have your answers but am running out of time this AM - gotta go marshall the 9th & 18th tee boxes at the Shark Shootout. I'll give you a full reply late this aft or evening as some of the controls don't work the way Mits would like you to think they do. "Perfect Color" ------ lol

I love how they say not to use the top of the tv for a shelf, but if you place a center channel speaker at the base of the tv you block IR in and out.
Not sure if putting the speaker on a shelf 4 inches below the tv would separate the voice from the picture too much or not though it is probably not
much different from putting it on top of the tv. I know the no thought solution to sensor placement is in the center, but the smart placement would have been pushing to the outside.

Another question: can not decide whether to waste a little power and feed all signals through receiver in which case only one input source for tv and not using audio return, or use the audio return and the receiver is then used just for audio with dvr and bluray connected directly to the tv. I can not get an answer to any question posed to mits. They just never respond. I do not know if the audio return sends the entire encoded signal that came in through the hdmi back to the receiver or if some useful information is lost. You have any idea?

All this fantastic tech we have now and still the best out of the box color is on a good quality crt such as my old sony trinitron flat glass version.

Geez, just bought a little new model 26" sharp LCD tv and right out of the box color and brightness perfect. Can't perfectly track fast motion but was not expecting perfection at this price. Was rather expecting it for $4k

Is 13.03 the new patch? I thought it was only at 13.02 before but that could be bad memory. If it is, it automatically loaded itself into the tv through ethernet connection.
I do notice I can change values in adv1 and they stick but I actually had not tried it before.

Firmware V46_13_03 was released yesterday and the problem with the malfunctioning ADV1 & 2 mode Grayscale controls has been fixed.

So that was downloaded by the tv automatically. Will you be publishing your setting and what viewing mode they would be used for/
Can you still answer my questions from above?

You should ask Mits to add an ADV3. That should be possible with a patch though they might have to sacrifice one of the other settings.
