So whats next???

Im getting the itch, but have two directions.

Here is my current setup:

Marantz SR6005 (110W (20Hz - 20kHz, 0.08% THD, 2ch driven) x7)
powering
2 RF82 II's (SENSITIVITY: 98dB @ 2.83V / 1m ) and 1 RC62 II (SENSITIVITY: 98dB @ 2.83V / 1m )


Looking at either adding:

XPA-3 $699 (200 watts RMS @ 8 ohm (0.1% THD) and using the 6005 as a pre/pro

or

a second VTF2 MK4 $550


Im kinda thinking the sub is a better move, because my Klipsch are so efficient anyways.

Well, if I were buying...that's what I'd get. I certainly don't need another sub. Mine is enough for the whole neighborhood. I just need more, clean, efficient power. lmao

It probably does matter. I mean - it depends on how damn loud you want to play your Klipsch. I've often wanted to feed them more power just to see how they sound at much higher listening levels. Sooooo curious. As you say....it may not matter. I don't know...but curious.

If your room is big - I suspect another sub would work nicely.

I watch my movies at 0.0dB on the Marantz, which is reference level and they sound real good. I went higher for the Metallica France Blu-ray, and my damn ears rang for awhile. I guess thats why I wonder if louder is needed, or maybe it would be cleaner. The marantz will be putting out more than 110w/channel with only 3 channels, and at 0.08%THD, thats not bad.

Yeah, I know what you mean. What I'm wondering...and I often hear - what about the soundstage? I read often that with stand alone amps, that the soundstage just deepens. For me, that would be huge, because 2 channel music is what I complain about the most. Soundstage is just too narrow. Depth is just not there.

Jason I don't think adding the xpa-3 will necessarily make it louder, but it will certainly be much cleaner and more defined. I think you are at a point where either is a necessary step in a growing HT. I honestly couldn't say one is more important than the other, and in a way I think it doesn't really matter since either way you going to be adding both eventually so you can't go wrong. If it was me I can tell you I probably would go with the sub first, as two subs really do tend to smooth out the bass response in a room.

Thanks Caliber. Kinda what I was thinking. My hesitation to go more power now is things do sound fine for me(other than needing a little more bass in the large room), and I hope to do a HT room in 2 years or so. I hate to go out and get crazy with audio gear, just to buy more again. 2 subs will carry into any room just fine, a 3 channel amp not so much. I could always add more channels, but id rather buy a 5 channel/7channel amp once when the time comes.

Still I wouldn't hesitate to buy a three channel amp before your HT room is up and running, I think it would carry into your HT room just fine. Many use multiple amps in fact allot of guys use a three channel for center and rears and add another two channel for the fronts. I know many audiophiles prefer this so they can have a dedicated two channel amp for music enjoyment and you can add 2 channel amps from there if you decide to go 7.1,9.1. This is just something else to consider down the road.
