Default LG 32CS560, LG 37CS560, and LG 42CS560 Calibration & Owners Thread

    For LG 32CS560 LG 37CS560 & LG 42CS560

I just acquired an LG 32CS560 LCD for my wife's back bedroom/office/WomanCave. Although it is a basic LCD display it provides a surprisingly good picture. I don't normally provide calibration settings but because this TV receives little attention on forums I'll be posting them. Caveat: Calibration settings do not transfer well from one TV to another.

I'm leaving for a fishing trip to Canada but will be back in a week to add to this thread. For a teaser, the following graphs are from an initial ISF Day calibration. Pay no attention to the 10 & 20% grayscale figures as the meter used was an i1Pro spectro and they do not measure accurately at these luminance levels. Next week I'll have the correct lower luminance numbers.

    Excellent 30-100 GS

    LG_GS.jpg

Very good color saturation linearity is possible with proper calibration.

    LG 32CS560 ISF Day Satutations.jpg

Edit: It turned out that the 10% luminance color balance was more or less correct. Using a meter accurate at lower levels (which was used for the calibration in post #2, 20% was quite good, 15% started to deteriate, and at 10% and 5% the color balance really fell apart.

Day settings for a semi bright room:

Peak white output: 46.4 Foot Lamberts - this is about the maximum I want in this particular room. I'll do bright room (60FtL) at a later date.
MLL: .02FtL - measurement taken when the room was not completely dark so there was some reflection.
    On/Off Contrast Ration: 2359 - acceptable

Picture Mode: Expert 1 - can be changed to ISF which locks the settings
    Back Light: 59
    Contrast: 83
    Brightness: 46
    HS: 50
VS: 50 - LG is one of the few manufacturers with a softening feature as part of both HS & VS. 50 is the neutral (off) setting. Anything higher adds unwanted content to edges and anything softer blurs the picture.
    Color: 55
    Tint: 0

    Expert:
    Dyn Cont: Off
    Noise Red: Off
Gamma: Low - calibrating as close as possible to 2.2 Gamma
    Black Level: Low
    Gamut: Standard
    Edge Enhance: Off

    Color Balance: Warm

    2 point Grayscale control:
    RC 5, GC -10, BC -13
    RB 0, GB -1, BB 0

    2D Color Management System:
    Red Color: -3
    Red Tint: -5
    GC: 0
    GT: -7
    BC: -2
    BT: -3
    YC: -2
    YT: -3
    CC: -1
    GT: -3
    MC: 1
    MT: -3

Traditional HDTV calibration has been accomplished using 100% color saturation levels as the goal for correctness. In my opinion, this is the wrong approach because most content is at lower levels. Newer versions of calibration software now enable the ability to measure accuracy at various levels from 20-100%. In this case, 25, 50, 75, & 100% points are available with ChromaPure. What I have done is to minimize the errors (dE94) at 50% and 75%. dE less than 3 is generally considered to be visually imperceptible from perfect.

This is the Calibration Report based on 100% saturation levels:

Does look good. Kinda like the 32" 2009 Panny LCD I have. That thing calibrates well with only 2pt adjustments.

I'm possibly interested in the 37" model, but from reading up on AVS and other user reviews, it seems LG has certain image "enhancements" forced on with no menu option to turn them off. People keep hoping LG will issue a firmware update to fix the lack of menu settings.

Buzz, what was your experience with the image quality and extra image smoothing, etc.?

I've read that post previously but have little experience with last year's model that was referenced. Image fidelity is very good as can be seen in the above calibration reports so I don't have a problem with the presently available controls - except that maybe a 10p GS control set would help with the 10% color balance and gamma problem. Other than that, the 2p works fine. The 2D CMS works better than I expected. Although there is technically no luminance control of the colors, the Color controls (as in Red Color, Green Color, etc.) affect both saturation and luminance so it takes a bit of experimenting.

Where is the "image smoothing"? I just got the TV yesterday afternoon so I'm not fully knowledgeable. The very term alerts me though after seeing how reducing Sharpness below the center point destroys the picture.

I'm leaving on a fishing trip in a half hour so I won't be able to check anything until next Thursday or Friday. Meanwhile, any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated and I'll find the answers on my return.

The thread also covers the 120Hz model (CS570), LG has stupidly left out control over their frame interpolation (TruMotion) settings. They did it to their other basic LED edge lit sets too. So obviously that doesn't apply to the CS560 being 60Hz. So woops! never mind about that part of it.

I am interested in what you think about the black levels, LGs basic TVs have always had very light levels, and from the readings you have posted it looks like this one is no different.

    Enjoy your fishing

"reserved for Bright room Day settings"

Is that still on the agenda, or have you moved on? My question isn't to imply that I don't appreciate your night and semi bright room settings (hence the 'thanks'). I'm just curious, that's all.

You could say I've moved on in that the TV is in Wisconsin and I spend winters in Florida. I won't be back there until late May and I'll do it then.
