Is 65" TOO BIG at 8'

Moving into new studio rental next month.
Limited in space in Gotham City.
Debating between 65" or the smaller VT...
At 8' viewing distance, do ya'll think 65" might be too large as opposed to a 55"

In my opinion you can never go too big. I have a 60" about 10 feet away and it now looks small. So I'd say no. -CC

Depends on the quality of the material you're generally watching. If you're watching a lot of compressed 720p/1080i TV stations then you may notice the defects/pixelation at that size/distance though its probably a bit borderline there. If you're watching a lot of 1080p Blu Ray movies then its likely ok. If it were 9-10' I'd probably say you were fine, but 7-8' is that borderline area. Probably also depends on how good your vision is at picking up artifacts. Even if you do notice some mild artifacts on normal TV watching, having that immersive feel on movies may be worth the trade off. I just wonder if a TV that large would overwhelm a small studio apartment, though, just from an aesthetic point of view.

The Living Room is not too wide but long.....and the seating is what it is.
Currently have a 60" in the house so I know how it feels. Just not sure if the 65 at that distance is just way too overbearng

Eight feet is fine for 65". THX says the the min for a 65" is 6.5 ft. I'm at 8.5.

You should view some video on different size Panasonic plasma sets at a local store from your intended viewing distance.
If you are too close on a large size set you might be able to see dithering effects or start to see the pixels, depending on your personal visual accuity.
I personally got a 50" for 7-8 feet viewing distance. I think I could move up to 55" but I wouldn't want larger than that in my small media room.

I agree. If you can afford it, go as big as you can. You'll regret it if you don't. I have a 60" Kuro that I sit around 8ft or less from and I wanna go bigger!!!

Normally, I would be strongly on the side of those asking "What material do you watch?" and/or "How forgiving - or Critical - are your eyes?"

We watch a 60" ST50 from 9 feet: most blu-rays & hd dvds look great; most sd dvds and "HD TV" programs look Less-Than-Great, with the majority revealing at least somewhat-irritating source flaws at that distance - and a good percentage looking downright ugly.

Alas, the VT series does not give you a 60" option, and there is a significant size difference jumping from 55" to 65". So - assuming that Budget is not an issue - would probably opt for the 65" and use the resulting Disappointing PQ (on SD DVDs....) as an excuse to UPGRADE as much of my movie collection as possible to blu-rays!

Ditto. Fine for blu-ray, maybe a little marginal on lower quality HD cable/sat. I'd go for 65 every time.

Go big. It will be fine. I'm about 7.5 feet away on my 65" and it's fine. I want larger and hopefully 2013 brings that pdp to me.

I had these same questions last year. One of my biggest concerns was that 65 inches would be too big and hard to follow fast movie scenes. I also had concerns as to if it would affect picture quality. I bought the 65vt30 and I can tell you first hand I do not regret it one bit. At first it will feel like you are in a movie theatre, especially if you are coming from something smaller than 40 inches but after a week or so, you get use to it and when looking at 55 inch tv's you really appreciate making the choice to go for a larger set,

Some Pros are that 3D looks great and is even more immersive. This alone is enough to go for a larger size tv. Sports also look really great on large screens. I have people over and they are always impressed by the picture and threatre like feel of my tv. To be honest bro....I actually sit 5 feet from my tv now, due to the position of my lazyboy chair, and even at that distants I don't have any issues with pq, following the motion on the screen etc.

The only negative is when watching statelite or cable. I notice the closer you are the softer the picture looks. However this is when I'm within 5-7 feet, but when I move 8-10 back, that problem is resolved. I guess the best way to describe it is that these TV's are so good that whatever imperfections the picture has is magnified, but again that can be solved by sitting further back (8-10 feet). Blu ray doesn't have these issues, as well as HBO, ESPN and channels with high quality HD picture, rather you will notice this on channels with average HD picture. Also SD looks horrendous but I have DTV and I think no matter what size TV I picked, It would still look this way.

Good luck on your purchase, but I would suggest going for 65 as you won't regret it.

Also if you are still on the fence.....go to bestbuy and just sit in front of a 65 and view about 10-15 minutes of content to see how comfortable you feel. They usually have their chairs about 5 feet away so if you can handle that, then you can definatly handle sitting 8 feet back.

I agree. I sit 5-7 feet away and I really want a 70 inch or higher in my next purchase. There really is no such thing as too big...lol

65 inchs at 8 fet is fine i sit 5 and a half feet away from my 50 inch st30 and now its to small lol but iam happy with my tv
