NPD: Tablet Shipments to Eclipse Notebook Shipments in 2016

Tablet PC shipments are projected to grow from 121 million units this year to 416 million units in 2016 – representing a 28% annual compound growth rate of 28%, according to new data from NPD DisplaySearch.

That growth surpasses notebook (laptop) PC shipments, which are expected to increase from 208 million units in 2012 to 393 million units by 2017. A key driver for tablet PC growth is adoption in mature markets (including North America, Japan and Western Europe), which will account for 66% of shipments in 2012 and remain in the 60% range throughout the forecast period. Tablet PC shipments into mature markets will grow from 80 million units in 2012 to 254 million units by 2017.

Building upon convenience-oriented features, including instant-on capability, long battery life and extreme portability, tablet PCs are expected to evolve into a compelling alternative to notebook PCs. Tablet PCs are expected to incorporate multi-core processors, increasingly stable operating systems, growing app libraries and higher resolution displays.

Never had a tablet period. I haven't ever really imagined a use for one other than playing mobile games like Where's my Water on a larger screen while I take a shit.

Same here, just don't see the advantages over my laptops, which already provide me w/enough portability.

But they're nowhere near as effective as a laptop. I don't think they have any real advantages over a laptop... Only disadvantages. Its really just a big touch screen smart phone, and smart phones suck for all but basic web browsing. Ok for casual boredom web browsing, but terrible for anything serious. I do intensive web browsing; right now I have 14 tabs open, plus I have zero patience; I need a computer that is faster than my reaction time.

Example; try booking a vacation on a tablet; go to all the vacation sites and search for a good place to stay, compare dates, etc. That shit will take you all day on a tablet or 15 minutes on a PC

Yepp, if I ever need to do any bit of typing, I drop the phone and fire up my laptop.
