Default Led by families, interest in 3D is plummeting.

As the cost of viewing a film in 3D continues to rise within the United States, cost-conscious consumers are passing up the glasses when they visit their

Even though I do not care for 3D TV - and care Very Little about 3D Theatrical Movies (Avatar being easily the best 3D presentation to date) - am not quite ready to declare that this latest attempt to popularize 3D has failed.

Still, there have been numerous articles over the past year (or so; & several of which have been referenced on HDJ -) that have mentioned the overall LACK of interest on the part of the greater viewing population for 3D programming; and information like the quote below makes me Cautiously Optimistic that the American public has slightly more sense than it is generally credited with....

the draining interest in 3D films at the box office is already having an impact on the sales of 3D televisions. According to a recent study conducted by the NPD, only 14 percent of U.S. consumers consider 3D to be a vital feature that will motivate them to upgrade their existing HDTV in the next six months. Even more recent, DirecTV announced plans to scale back on 3D content development due to a general lack of interest from subscribers.

Am guessing that there will continue to be a place for the "3D Spectacular" at the theaters, as well as a niche audience for smaller films, but even with the advent of newer recording technology that simplifies (and thus lowers the cost of) shooting in 3D, would look for their box office share to continue to decline, barring a significant lowering of the cost differential for 3D vs 2D movies....

Long live 3-D and 3-D TVs!

3-D is just another step forward in the way movies and TV shows are constructed. Silent films gave way to "talkies". Black and white movies and TV shows were overtaken by color films and color TV shows. Widescreen movies replaced academy ratio films. Bigger and better 16 x 9 TVs took the place of puny, little square sets. Surround sound programming enriched movies and TV shows which were once single channel. And now 3-D is going through its formative cycle and will continue to enrich the media that we consume.

(Back in the 50s, 3-D was off to a weak start in the theaters due to barely capable technology. And no way could could you reproduce a 3-D film in your house. But now the technology is here and getting better and you can have a fantastic 3-D experience in your own home.)

Would you give up the surround sound, widescreen, color viewing experience that you are currently getting from your TV and resort back to silent black and white programming on a 13" TV?

3-D is just another inevitable step forward.
