That is an appropriate and accurate article regarding the state of calibration at the present time, and honest about the fact that display calibration is not for everyone.

The art progresses - 3D LUT processing for the home market is coming in less than a month.

He said the calibrators told him they usually take 90 minutes to calibrate a display. That seem awfully fast. Sounds like Best Buy calibrator's standards. I heard the good calibrators spend a lot more time than that.

    Greetings

The BB guys get to spend about 80 minutes in any one home. This includes set up and break down of the gear. Probably leaves a solid 60 min for actual calibration. They don't do CMS nor are they trained to do that ... nor do they have the proper gear for it. Pretty much color with a blue filter or blue isolation and that is the best it gets on that front.

They won't be tackling any 10 point anything in the 60 minutes. Also does not allow them much time to address room lighting issues since they will most likely show up before 6 pm on any given day.

But what they do is a legitimate ISF calibration. ISF says it is. That is why this is advertised as such in the store.

Can a real calibration really take under 90 minutes ... ? Of course it can. I've taken as little as 10 minutes to calibrate certain Sony LED displays when I was doing stuff in a store setting where graphs were not important, but rather the end result. So very possible. Obviously it depends on the TV in question. Would I try this in a client's home? Highly unlikely ... unless it was TV 5 out of 12 TVs that I am doing for the person on the same day. The first set takes 3 hours with the full education, but once that is done, just the physical calibration gets repeated over and over. No more education.

    Regards

I think Andrew miss understood that statement....it was said that BB calibrators normally take about 90 minutes.....most THX calibrations with customer education take around 4 hours.

Yes four hours is about what D-Nice took to calibrate my 8500 and worth every penny.

I'm just a DIY calibrator, but I would imagine that it would depend on the display and how extensive the picture controls are; I don't see it being any different for the pros. For example, a 10pt system with 3D CMS would take much longer than a 2pt system and no CMS. I spent hours on my LH90 but my ST50 took less than an hour.

The Panasonic plasma's with simple high/low grayscale and color/tint did not take very long at all as well. The first few times I did my D7000 it took a LOOOOOONG time. But with practice I could do it pretty fast.
