Jeremy Mayfield suspended indefinitely from Nascar

DARLINGTON, S.C. -- For the first time, a Sprint Cup driver has been busted for violating NASCAR's new random drug-testing policy.

Jeremy Mayfield, a five-time winner on NASCAR's premier series currently driving for his own team, has been suspended indefinitely for an undisclosed substance abuse violation, series vice president Jim Hunter said Saturday at Darlington Raceway. Mayfield, 39, failed to qualify for the Southern 500.

Hunter would not specify what substances were taken, but did say the violations were for more than merely alcohol use.

"NASCAR has one of the toughest substance abuse policies in all of sports," Hunter said. "It's all about safety and competition. And a positive result means an indefinite suspension from all competition. The implementation of the random testing aspect of this program has been welcomed and supported by the drivers, owners, and other competitors in the sport."

I wish it would say what kind of drugs that he is being accused of taking. In my opinion if they aren't gonna say what he was taking then they should not have stated why he was suspended. Should have just stated Mayfield suspended indefinitely.

Earlier today ESPN was saying that it was coke. I see they have pulled that rumor from the site now.

Damn!! I read also that it was a mixture of prescribed meds that showed up as something else. I guess until Nascar or Mayfield comes out and says what it was we will never know.

Jeremy Mayfield believes NASCAR is using him as an example.

Mayfield was suspended by NASCAR on May 9 after testing positive for methamphetamines, a violation of the substance abuse policy. He spoke to ESPN's "Outside The Lines" on Wednesday.
