    Default Wireless Question

I do not get wireless routers. OK - that was like admitting to being an alcoholic.

Anyway - I have a Linksys wireless router (not sure model, but it's wireless G)

It works typically just fine. The wife and I both have Dell laptops that when turned on, automatically find the router and connect that way. No issues.

For Christmas, we bought our son a brand new Sony Vaio with Windows 7 (not that should matter) and every time he turns it on, it will kick us off the connection to the router. It's just like someone turns off the power. I have to go down and turn off router and back on again...then we all 3 can connect.

What up bros? What a butt pain.

If it's the plain "Wireless G" then I would say it can't handle that many users at one time. Some of the other models, such as the Wireless G with SpeedBooster and Wireless A/G, should handle higher internet traffic. See the chart below:

GOS don't feel alone I battled with my Linksync at my calif apt. and it kicked me off many times well I discovered other tenants were stealing my wireless waves.....once I used the WEP it stopped.....but it actually was because of the multiple users...go figure...

For most modems its something you can setup with the installation disc. Try running that disc in your PC, and go through the different settings on it. WEP should be one of the choices when going through the settings process.

Guys WEP is about the worst encryption you can use. It's better than using none, but its not good. It transmits your info, open, easy to crack. If you need help about setting up wireless internet or any other questions about that kinda stuff shoot me a PM. It's what I do for a living after all.

3 People should not be kicking you off your G router.
    I own some stuff.

Can we post the results in a public forum so others may benefit in a fix?

    Thanks

If not encrypted then what other security should we have to keep others off of our wireless, I have Linksys with three laptops in the house and our security is , I think, called security enabled encryption. I remember it was simply a series of letters and numbers like a passcode that I installed with the original disc.

WEP for me was the easiest to set up because it only required 10 numbers and letters.....I've tried WPA....but I always mosplace or forget what the key characters are.

rizz you can most of the time on your desktop computer access your modem config by typing in your ip address in the address bar and it will bring up your modem configuration.

Network Security is what I do. I've been a CCNP for a few years, and am a newly minted CCSP.

Hit me up with any questions you folks have. I'll subscribe to this thread and keep up with it as best I can.

I have a hell of a time networking my laptop with my desktop....my laptop runs Win 7 and my desktop has Win XP pro.....I always get window messages saying I don't have admin rights WTF? I am the Admin for the computers...is it because XP doesn't recognize Homegroup in Win 7? I see the other computers in the network but accessing files is a challenge even when I give full sharing rights.
