Default Here is an Audio question

What Will an AMP do for my current setup?

    Does it intensify the sound?

I currently have a Yamaha receiver with klipsch reference speakers 7.1 surround all Klipsch reference. My reciever is beefy 140 watt per channel

What will an amp do for this existing basement setup?

Since Klipsch speakers have very high sensitivity (usually around 94dB - 97dB) you don't really need beefy amplifiers to make them shine. 140 watts is more than enough IMO even you listen to reference levels.

I would take that money and invest into some awesome subwoofers, unless you already have some.
I'm happy with what I currently have.

Really need to know the model of speakers.. Some need more then others.. sure the sensitvity is high, but some have some imped. dips that even 140 channel amps cant handle... In all honest the amp is 7x140 ?? that is NOT all channel driven.. maybe half that if you are lucky.. so I need to know the model of the AVR as well.. maybe there are some benchtest online somewhere.

I had a 125x7 that could not handle my Ultra2 THX's.. went into protection mode.. now I have 400x7

Rxv-3900 is the avr. Yamaha. Speakers are RF-82 in The fronts with RC 82 center. The four surrounds are RS-42

    BenchTest from Hometheater.com

Five channels driven continuously into 8-ohm loads:
    0.1% distortion at 69.2 watts
    1% distortion at 81.5 watts
Seven channels driven continuously into 8-ohm loads:
    0.1% distortion at 62.9 watts
    1% distortion at 68.9 watts

Now for your speakers.. Obviously a sub doing the dirty work down low is going to help take some load off your AVR.. but RF-82,RC62 are demanding. They have impedence dips in the 3 ohm range if I remember correctly. HT will be less demanding because the demand will very, but if you did all channel music at a loud volume you could potentially have some clipping. I dont know your listening habits.. you maybe fine as is, but you do have the potential for clipping to occur at high volume levels.

Yes there are. I'm partial to Sunfire, Conrad Johnson, Krell, Linn, Meridian, Anthem and Marantz. Ones in bold I am currently using in an A/V or audio only system.
