I have a chance to either get the Def Tech STS for $2,000/pair or the BP-8040 for $1300/pair. What's the better deal? Do the STS sound that much better compared to the 8040 for that kind of price difference?

I personally wouldn't go with the 8040ST. It sounded thin to me compared to it's bigger brother the 8060. Or even bigger bro the 8080.
I haven't heard the STS towers so I can't comment on them.
If you have a Golden Ear dealer close to you test those as well. You owe it to yourself to listen to every speaker you can before purchasing. You may surprise yourself and find out you like something cheaper even more.
I own some stuff.
Thanks. I have yet to hear the Golden Ear's but I do have a dealer close to me. The thing is, they retail at $1,300/pair meaning that would be $600 more than what I can get the STS. My budget won't allow me to go over the $2000 mark..
^ No, haven't listened to them yet. Just been reading reviews online so far. Budget in mind, I think it will come down to the Def Tech Mythos STS or BP-8060ST. I can get an even better deal on the 8060. I won't buy before I listen, but I have a feeling it's between these two.
I understand limiting yourself on funds. Have you listened to the STS's? Were you happy with them?
Nope, haven't listened to any yet. Just trying to get a small list together for when I do get to listen to them all. Basically, looking to spend no more than $1,000 each on a floor standing speaker. I like having a built in sub as well.
Speakers are something you will have (most likely) for a LOOOONGG time. I know you have a budget, but I would not limit yourself on the extra $600.00 on the golden ears. They might be worth waiting a month or two longer to save money for. My experience with the supersat 50s has been awesome.
Current TV: Panasonic TCP65VT50
Current Receiver: Yamaha Aventage RX-3000
Current Speakers : L/C/R = Goldenear SuperSat 50, Surrounds = GoldenEar Supersat 3s,Sub 1 = REL R-305, Sub 2= GoldenEar Forcefield 3
Blue Ray Players: PS3 (fat and slim), Oppo BDP-93
MISC: Panamax M5300 Ex Power conditioner, Xbox 360 (fat and slim), BDI Avion Series II 8927 Espresso Oak
^ Okay, I'll wait and save up some more and then try everything out, including the Golden Ear's. Luckily I have a dealer withing 10 mins from my work. Hopefully they will have some to listen to. Thanks
I heard the GE's in N.C. and they sounded pretty darn good and a friend has the STS Super Towers and they sound good to my old ears. But the STS Super Towers are usually $1400 each so you got a good deal from someone.
