I wonder if they can really hold their own at that price against the competition.

I agree, I am a former polk owner who is now un impressed with anything I have heard from them, after being shown the light. All that being said I would still be interested in hearing their new offerings, you never know they could be great I will be doing some auditioning of these just to see.
I really like the enclosure. I'm not a fan of the oval shaped woofers. It serves a purpose, but one of their missions was to create long lasting speakers. Most ovel shaped, or odd shaped cones usually create an unbalanced load for the drivers over time. I see why they did, just not sure how it will stand the test of time. Now take that enclosure and use traditional round cones and we're talking.
Also, I read where they've made changes to the tweeter so it no longer needs to be horn loaded. It also has more power handling. I'm not sure whether this is a real improvement, as it will probably take more amp for really high frequencies to match that of a horn loaded, but hopefully the distortion is really low as well. Horn loading by nature results in lower distortion due to less movement required for same output.
I'd be willing to give them a listen, but I feel they will fall short of value versus the Monitor and Lsi series. I really would like for these to be a hit, cause their subs really put them in a bad light.
Something' amiss.
I think Polk is a good niche speaker...as long as they stay in the budget speaker category...for small areas at their price point...they are a good alternative...but the key here is to stay in the budget category...if you wander in the price territory of GoldenEar...you better be able to play with the big boys...there is so much competition in that segment of the market...
I completely agree. I like choice, but to a large degree despise too much of it. When you start going up to the serious bigger budget arena you'd better actually offer something better than what's out there or at least something that fills some niche.
I suppose the biggest reason they have a line like this is to keep loyal buyers with them when they decided to upgrade.

Well price is going to be the issue here, polks former flagships were $1,500 each, and like you said at this price point you better be able to hang in with the big boys. Now from MY experience with their previous models they were no where near the offerings of Paradigm, PSB, KEF, Klipsch. Like I said I am willing to give these a fair shake, but at the price point they will likely be at polk is going to have their work cut out for them.
