I dont want my rears behind my couch bc my couch is in the middle of the room and am afraid the dogs may knock over the stands....
I have tray ceilings, about 8 feet high, is that too high to place rear speakers for a 5.1 setup?

In a perfect world 5-6ft. high is roughly where you want to be. If you have to go 8ft. that will work just try to angle them down slightly.
My sides are in-ceiling and my rears are almost to the ceiling. You actually don't want them pointing directly at you so mounting up high should be no problem.
If you look for the bad in displays expecting to find it, you surely will.
I'm not a calibrator but I play one on my TV.

Regarding the title of the thread, all I can say is....
"THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID"
Denon AVR-988 * Harmony ONE
Klipsch RF-82 II front * RC3 center * RP3 surrounds * KEF HTS1001 rear
Rythmik Audio DS1501 CI sub
Oppo BDP-83
Samsung LN46B550 LCD
Gamut D200 MKII, Parasound P3, Totem Forest, Samsung BDP3600, Musical Fidelity V-DAC, Pace Whistler(PVR), Samsung PN58B850, Harmony 670
The couch is in the middle of an open floor plan type living room that is a weird shape, so even if they did go on the back way, wiring back there would be a night mare and it would be really far away. Seems the only means is now to use in-ceiling speakers - the wife hates the idea of mounting bookshelf speakers on the ceiling tray or wall. If I go the ceiling speaker route, should they be placed directly overhead of the couch or a little behind? Should they fire straight down towards the floor, so should I mount on the vertical part of the tray so they still fire side to side?
On the other hand - this is a good thread. We need another thread that addresses if the fronts can be placed up high, but angled down.....

First off sorry for the real shitty pics. I accidentally submersed my iPhone in the water so the camera sensor is pretty much shot.
In these two pics you will see where I have my Polk OMW3 surrounds at. I run 5.1. They are 8 feet high, I measured this morning before I took the shots. I don't have them angled down or anything. Maybe its just a good speaker, or maybe it's the magic of MCACC on my VSX-33 but they do not sound directional at all. When I play COD: Black OPS you the surrounds sound like they are coming from behind you, though they aren't. Shooting games are usually a pretty good test for that kind of stuff since they have a lot going on in your surround channels.
You can see them hanging out in the back corners of the room.

As long as the sound still envelopes you with the speakers that high then I think it will work. I always assumed they should be same level as your ear or the fronts.

Please don't encourage G-Man...he's bombed out on his joke..then he tried to revive the joke(which never works) and now he's trying to salvage some dignity by changing the topic...let him squirm...maybe another Nugent reference is more suitable...Wang Dang Sweet Poontang..
