Default Quick Question or two or three

Just got my Onkyo 906 up and running yesterday. I plan on getting into some new speakers in the next week or 2. In the mean time I hooked up two speakers from a cheap self system. It states in the manual you can connect speakers with an impedance between 4 and 16ohms. I have no idea what the specifications are on the temporary speakers I'm using. I have the receiver set to the lowest 4ohm setting, but I'm worried the speakers are under 4ohm. Is this potentially harmful to the amp? Sounds better than the TV speakers but I don't want to make a bone head play and damage anything, I've waited this long.

The other thing is I'm putting an order in to monoprice for a couple cables. I have used Monoprice for AV cables with high regards to their quality. I was planning on ordering a spool of 14ga speaker wire as well. Anybody use Monoprice for speaker wire? What is your opinion of their speaker wire quality? Lastly is 14ga right for the job? My longest run will be 25' give or take.

We highly recommend www.monoprice.comfor all of our wiring and cabling needs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do a search for the correct wire size here on the forum. L2W made a chart for the correct size wiring for the distance of the run. I can't remember off hand what section it is in. I'll look and post a link.

As far as the impedance goes.. Many 5.1 speaker systems are 6 or 8 ohms from what I have seen. Of course there is exceptions to the rules and that is why there are options.. It should state on the back what impedance your speakers are, but I doubt 4 ohms is it. If you can't find it I would choose 8 ohms. Usually in some receivers, if you pick 6 ohms or above, it will auto set. You may only need to set it to 4 if it is indeed 4 ohms.. On the 606, 4ohm is only an option on the"Euro Model".. What are the model of your speakers? It is NOT under 4 ohms..

As far as speaker wire goes, you sound like you are all set.. I had pretty much the sam25 to 30 ft runs for my rears.. I used 16 awg monoprice speaker wire and it works great.. 14 awg is more than enough awg for your runs.. So you are good to go.

Thanks for the feedback, and the links guys, I appreciate it. I'll be putting an order in.

Club Chubbie..... About the speakers, I took them from a cheap magnavox shelf stereo system my brother in law had, the speakers came with the system. I'll double check when I get home but I don't think there is any mention on the speakers themselves.

Paradigm, B&W dealers are close, that痴 where I値l start. I致e read good thing about manufacture direct Axiom speakers. I知 not brand loyal and the more bang for your buck theory is always a good thing. I値l probably turn to SVS or HSU for a sub. What I知 trying to get my head around is I plan on moving in the coming year. I知 going to end up with more room in the not so distant future. Currently my living room is small and the lay out is less than ideal. I知 going for the 5.1, my budget is 3k. Any recommendations would be appreciated my head is starting to spin. Here is my basic room layout:

You might want to read most of the posts and reviews of speakers and questions in the Speaker forum. Great info, many brands represented and recommendations...
Thanks, I'll check it out. I really like what I'm reading on the SVS system, impressive!!!!
