I hope this won't read like fanboy hype, but with all the good speaker advice in here, I thought I throw in another option. I own a set of Monitor Audio Silvers, and I think they sound amazing.
I have neither the scientific knowledge nor articulate skills to explain in audiophile terms what makes these speakers sound the way they do. I can tell you that they work well for both HT and music. They are designed in the UK, and I would consider them a warm sounding speaker (which possibly compliments the slightly treble heavy characteristic of my Onkyo AVR noted by L2W). If I close my eyes, it is difficult for me to pinpoint the sound source; they seem to fill the room. My towers are RS8s, but RS6s sound almost as good for less coin. My ears hear a bit more midrange with the 8s. See sig for full set.
The build quality, fit and finish are absolutely first rate. They add to our family room as (IMO) high end furniture pieces with a relatively small footprint, but they put out huge sound. My final list came down to these, Paradigm, DefTech, Mirage, and Axioms (sorry I don't recall all the model numbers anymore). My top two choices were between the MAs and the Paradigms, and I was allowed to audition them each in my home with my own amp for a few days. I preferred the overall balance of the MAs, but I'm certain I would have been happy with either.
I will try to edit this with some pics later. L2W, if you have any experience with these, I am very interested in your take. If you don't particularly care for them, that's fine, you won't hurt my feelings.
