Default I have $900 at Best Buy only (returning HDTV I won) - What 5.1 audio should I get?

First things first: I'm pretty much a novice with audio but love the results!
I won a 50" insignia HDTV from work but want to get the money for it since I already have a 46" sammy and no other space in my house that will accommodate a 50incher. This TV is now worth $900 in a Best Buy gift card. I want to get a new, upper scale home theater audio system.

I want a new 5.1 system (receiver and subwoofer) What are some great options (or brands) I can get at Best Buy under $1000? I want HDMI but other than that I think I'm open. I love action movies and I listen to music on my TV a lot.

    Hi Steve44,

The Onkyo home-theater-in-a-box (HTIB) systems are, by far, the best I've seen. You can get a very impressive one for ~$900, esp. if you price-match it at Amazon first.

    Thanks David,
but I was always under the impression that HTIB were inferior to purchasing the speakers/sub/receiver separately. Would most agree this to be an accurate general assumption and your option is one of the exceptions?

That is an accurate assumption. But you can get a great Onkyo HTIB for just the cost of the receiver to drive a separate system. Onkyo HTIB systems will surprise the hell out of you.
    I own some stuff.

You guys are failing to grasp the poster situation he has a BestBuy in store credit and he's is confined to spending it there, so the set I purposed was the best offering by bestbuy.

    Hi Steve44,

Oh, absolutely! There's no question about this: if you have the money to buy all the parts individually, do so. I misread your post and thought you were looking for a complete audio system for ~$900. Sorry about that! So, to be clear, are you looking for the entire system for under $900, or just an AVR and sub? If the latter, I can tell you I love, love, love my Denon receiver and Velodyne sub. If it's the former, though, then an HTIB will give you substantially more bang for your buck. HTIBs shine where someone needs the whole system and just hasn't got the cash for buying all the individual components separately. IMO, the Onkyos are the very best of these.

Also, I am shocked by Rizzo's link! He's absolutely right--Best Buy doesn't sell the Onkyos!! To me, that's just crazy. In that case, though, I agree with him that the Denon HTIB would make an excellent second choice.

Hope this helps (and sorry for the confusion).

    Yours,

    David

I dont know if this would work, but is the store credit good for magnolia? If it did this would give you more options, bestbuy just lacks really bad in the audio department, especially with speakers. If not I would go with the denon boston pack that RIZZ linked, it is a nice little setup.

Actually here is another one to look at.

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Klipsch+...&skuId=9388879

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Denon+-+...&skuId=9382492

I personally would go with this one over the denon and boston, but you should give a listen and see which one sounds better to you.

It's the same system to which you linked, I think. The url is just malformed. Yours still works, though:

OP here. Maybe I don't need a new surround sound system. I have the Yamaha HTR-5830 ( http://reviews.cnet.com/av-receivers...-31424994.html ). Bought it...somewhere around 4-5 years ago.
Seems the only thing I really need/want is HDMI. Anyone see any reason to upgrade or move to a different technology other than HDMI when looking at the specs on my old system? Thanks guys!!!
By the way, my old system was a 5.1 HTIB.

HDMI is only a mode of connection what you should be in the market for is an AVR that will decode all the new Codec's for Bluray playback see here http://www.highdefjunkies.com/showth...fo-for-Newbies for explanations

+1. You can get a very nice receiver for the sort of money you're talking about, too, Steve44.

    Let me try that again.

I am pretty sure that it the same receiver that comes with the boston speakers Rizz listed, so the only difference would be the speakers, which ultimately is a listeners preference. If it were me I would be looking at replacing your old receiver with new. Like Rizz said you will be able decode the new hd formats with an new one.

Okay for some weird reason that link wont work If you go to bestbuy.com and look under receivers it is the denon avr-590, and the price is $350.

Thanks for the tip!! Why would I need to decode newer hd formats though? Are there really different formats that are still coming out that'll actually catch my attention during a movie? (as opposed to my 4-5 year old receiver?)
Thanks once again!! Should be my last question??

Without a doubt the newer decoders produce the sounds as original created by the films makers and not simply 5.1 sound, much cleaner with TrueHD and DTS-HD MA being the very best of decoded sounds.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it, Denon makes some fine products. Onkyo is also good but not sold by BestBuy.
