Default Should I Upgrade Rear Surrounds?

I keep debating whether I should upgrade my rear surrounds which happen to be wall mounted small Infinity speakers. I may have the update bug. I wouldn't mind replacing them if I truly realized a benefit. Any advice.

I'm assuming since you mentioned rear surrounds you have a 7 speaker setup...personally I don't hear that much content on speakers 6 and 7..

5.1 actually due to room design. I would love to add to the 5.1 system but logistics not possible due to running speaker wires, etc.

What are the difference in driver sizes between what you have now and what you plan on getting?

I upgraded my sides two months ago and to me it was worth while, but before I using Polk and rest of my speakers were Yamaha. So it was more of a timber matching for me which paid off big time. Especially since I listen to multi-channel music.

I listen to multi-channel music also and it's very important to me. I don't know the driver size. Just a relatively small speaker size. I'll take a closer look. I would assume any upgrade would include larger drivers. I didn't realize timbre matching was a concern with rear speakers. I wasn't planning on sticking with Infinity in the rear but all my other speakers are Infinity. Just FYI, these speakers are 18 years old. Would only consider upgrading the rear surrounds maybe.

Below is a quote from when I was looking at the rears, and I have to agree with him.

A couple weeks ago, a friend of mine lent me a pair of Dynaudio Focus 140 bookshelf speakers, which he had bought second-hand to use as his own rears. I laid them on my Klipsch, so that they stood right over my head, 45° behind me and... HOLY CR*P! Seriously, I could not believe my ears, as in multichannel everything had changed and improved dramatically. The matching timber was a bliss, and they sounded so much better than my Klipsch overall.

So my point is: good surrounds can contribute to your system just as much as anything else.

Great advice but how do I get voice matched new rear surround Infinity speakers to compliment my 18 year old Infinity Kappa 8.1 towers and infinity kappa Center channel? I would say quite a challenge. Beginning to think of not upgrading. Any ideas anyone?

I would recommend leaving them as they are now or replace all of the speakers.

    GOS:
Not happening. Not that I haven't thought about it.
The Infinity Kappa 8.1 towers are 18 years old in excellent condition and showing no signs of wear.
These are awesome in every way. I read some reviews on them yesterday and the
only criticism was you need a lot of power to drive these speakers. Best money I ever spent.
Did you buy the Oppo 93 yet? You know you want to.

I have come to the same conclusion. I am going to relocate them lower on my wall. Right now too high close to the ceiling.
    Thanks for your good advice.

Have you tried Ebay or Audiogon? Remember with Audiogon you can say what you want to buy as well.

Despite the good advice, I have pulled the trigger on Axiom Audio QS8 quadpolar rear surround speakers. I definitely was bit by the upgrade bug.
I figure when I replace the rest of my speakers, I will go with Axiom Audio also assuming I like these (30 day return policy). I will post impresions once I get them.
