Thread: Def Tech Questions

I'm about to buy a new 5.1 speaker system, and had a few questions about my choices. I am thinking of buying Definitive Technology:

2 ProMonitor 1000 (FL/FR)
1 ProCenter 2000 (center)
2 ProMonitor 800 Bookshelf (surround)
1 ProSub 800 subwoofer

Then I saw the C/L/R 2002 for the center and that I could use that for the L/R as well. The specs look pretty similar with the 2000, and I was wonder what the difference is between a center speaker and a C/L/R? Also, if I got the 2002 for the L/R speakers, would they fit on the stand for the 1000s?

What do you think of this setup? I am looking at either a Pioneer VSX-920-K or a Denon AVR-1611 for the receiver. My room is a great room that's about 25 feet to some partial walls and 38 feet to the back of the kitchen. The seating area is about 8 - 12 feet from the TV.

Why would you use a ProCenter for the L and R Front? My 3.1 is a ProMonitor 1000 for left and right (both set at 100hz), a ProCenter 2000 (set for 60hz) and a Klipsch Sub-12 set for 120hz, and it sounds great. Im running a 1911, had a 1909, sit 9.5 ft from the display and have the Monitors out wide on each side and toe'd in.

Ever since I went from a Center 1000 to the bigger 2000, made a world of difference. Also, the 100hz for the Monitors and 60hz for the Center is what Def Tech engineer recommended. That def works well, and with you going a whole set, I think you'll love it. The speakers are like Denon for me with AVR's, it'll take something serious for me to try another brand.

I can say, email them from the site with your plan and some options, and they'll give you some recommendations.

I have zero complaints, and they handled my blown driver to my complete satisfaction.

I did, but one has to consider pricing when calling them a killer. Putting a Camaro against a Porsche isn't necessarily fair


I've got about $800 in a center and two fronts, and for that price the sound is hard to beat. I'm also not very picky when it comes to audio, at least not anywhere like I am with video.

If I was in the market for a new system, Id surely consider GE.

Actually, the GoldenEars are priced to be an even better bargain than DefTechs. The Triton2s are competitive with the Mythos ST towers, which usually retail for around $2000. GE sells more economical speakers, too, though. The Triton2s are their top-line speakers (MSRP ~$1250--I am not making this up!).

Yepp, I dont dispute that, but we are talking pro monitor and center line. The GE stuff is way above that, not even close. Now If I was spending Mythos money, sure Id consider them.

I dont see anything on their site, in a price range, that would even make me consider not getting Promonitors and Procenters. I think we are comparing apples to oranges.

Now mythos vs triton, yeah I can see that.

Now, the Supersat 50 speakers (2 fronts and a center) has me interested. $1500 aint bad, and those speakers are packed.

Wait a minute, I see where this is going. Jason buys like 6 tv's a year, maybe we can get him to buy new speakers

I saw that, great price range for vs. the Procinemas. If I was to buy, it'd have to be a upgrade, and thats where the Supersat 50's come in.

That being said, a giddy review by a magazine is not quite enough to make me giddy and open my wallet. I love my Procinema speakers, and if it aint broke, dont fix it

GE also need to get with the program of an online retailer!
